Description
The Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) administers the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program, which provides temporary income assistance to Massachusetts workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own, are able to work, are available for work, and are actively seeking employment.
The Job Specialist III interviews customers for UI programs, explains program policies and procedures, refers customers to other agency programs, reviews customer data, and provides assistance. The role also includes related duties, such as data entry, statistical calculations, and creating reports.
Responsibilities- Interview customers by telephone, in person, or virtually to obtain records and input data into UI Online or other agency systems, and determine initial or ongoing eligibility.
- Explain to customers, by telephone, in person, or virtually, matters such as proper preparation of agency forms, program policies and procedures, service availability, rights and responsibilities, reporting requirements, and benefits of programs.
- Refer customers to agency services based on data gathered from interviews and written applications.
- Interact professionally with customers and operate computers and peripheral equipment following established procedures.
- Perform related duties, including speaking, reading, and writing Haitian/Creole fluently; translating UI law and procedures; authoring appropriate responses; creating reports; filing; processing; and directing mail.
- Work in person Monday through Friday at the Reemployment Center.
- Minimum entrance requirements:
- (A) Three years of full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) professional or paraprofessional experience in any of the following: personnel interviewing, recruitment or job placement; employment, vocational, educational, psychological, sociological, or rehabilitation counseling or guidance; credit or claims adjustment interviewing; job analysis or position classification work.
- At least one year of such experience must have been in a professional capacity, or an equivalent combination of experience and substitutions as described below.
- Substitutions:
- I. An associate’s degree from a recognized college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience.
- II. A bachelor’s degree may substitute for two years of the required experience.
- III. A graduate degree with a major in education, vocational or rehabilitation counseling, or public administration may substitute for the required experience.
- Education toward such a degree will be prorated based on the proportion of requirements actually completed.
