Position Overview:
The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center seeks a person‑centered, detail‑oriented Benefits Coordinator to research insurance and income benefits for individuals with mental health and substance use issues, and to support their application for benefits.
Schedule: Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week, day shift (Saturday and Sunday off).
Responsibilities- Provides education to newly admitted patients regarding admission procedures, admission notices, and patient rights.
- Interviews patients to assess health insurance, income benefits, and other entitlements.
- Conducts research on client entitlement benefits, identifies and clarifies conflicting information.
- Provides education to patients regarding health and income eligibility criteria and resources.
- Assists patients in applying for benefits.
- Provides weekly updates of entitlement benefit status and applications in database format to social workers and other hospital staff.
- Educates treatment team members on eligibility criteria and application process for income and health insurance benefits.
- Enters pre‑registration and registration information into the Electronic Medical Record system.
- Documents patient education, applications submitted, and responses from agencies responsible for determining eligibility.
- Collaborates with treatment team members and community‑based providers, engaging in creative problem‑solving to ensure patients discharge with health insurance and income resources.
- Participates in hospital performance improvement and quality care initiatives.
- Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing agency operations.
- Capacity to gather and assemble information through interviewing and observing individuals, and by examining records and documents.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise, and logical narratives and maintain accurate records of information.
- Ability to determine applicability of client data, draw conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
- Knowledge of referral sources for services to clients, including health insurance benefits, income benefits, community support, and social services resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge of social and economic barriers of a diverse client population and their impact on employability and self‑sufficiency.
- Effective communication skills and accurate record‑keeping, both orally and in writing.
- Aptitude to understand persons from different ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
- Empathy toward those with emotional stress, trauma, substance use concerns, and legal problems; ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful or emergency situations.
- Capacity to prioritize and organize multiple tasks and demonstrate problem‑solving skills under adverse working conditions.
- Proficiency with personal computer (PC) based systems and applications.
- Fluency in a second language is desirable given the population served.
