Principal System Operations Engineer

Hybrid – Seaport Boston, MA (2-3 days a week).

Job Description

Onshape – a PTC SaaS business – is developing a completely new Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) and design data management platform for professional mechanical designers and engineers, delivered globally as SaaS. Think Solid Works meets Git Hub meets Google Docs. Our office is in the heart of Boston’s beautiful Seaport District.

PTC seeks an experienced Principal System Operations Engineer/Developer to contribute to the deployment, expansion, and monitoring of our global cloud service. You will work on our one‑of‑a‑kind 3D collaborative CAD application with cutting‑edge cloud, web, and mobile technologies with responsibilities for building, operating and scaling our global CAD and data management service. Use your Linux systems and operations skills to design and implement new automation, ensure reliable performance, and maintain security for the next generation of 3‑D‑designed products.

Successful candidates will be self‑motivated and hands‑on with the ability to dig into the code and help improve our deployment infrastructure. The candidate will be integral to creating a “low touch” automated environment and work closely with teammates to implement and refine new techniques for deploying and monitoring the infrastructure. Qualified candidates should have a background in Operations, Dev Ops, QA, or Support.

Responsibilities
  • Not just doing the work, but teaching others and explaining the “why” behind technical decisions
  • Looking for places you can improve the service and not just take direction
  • Not being afraid to roll up your sleeves and dig into the logs
  • Constantly thinking about system robustness, stability, and scalability
Daily Tasks
  • Work to complete stories and fix bugs on a three‑week Agile‑style release process using a CI/CD pipeline
  • Review logs to debug issues with deployed, globally distributed environments
  • Take ownership of new solutions, ideas, assignments, action items, and issues, and drive them to completion
  • On‑call rotation on average 1 week at a time every two months
Preferred Skills / Experience
  • US Citizenship or Green Card required due to ITAR requirements
  • Ability to commute to the Seaport Boston office 2–3 days a week
  • 10+ years in a highly technical, hands‑on operations / Dev Ops / support / QA role
  • Experience with large AWS, Azure, or GCP environments is strongly recommended
  • Strong experience with administering and deploying on Linux systems
  • Experience with automated deployment and monitoring tools like Puppet and Ansible
  • Experience with automated Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform, Cloud Formation, etc.
  • Experience with backend databases like Mongo

DB or Elasticsearch is a plus
  • Experience supporting Java applications is a plus
  • Python or bash scripting is a plus
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, engineering, science, or equivalent experience
