Job Description:
The Assistant Safety Manager will be responsible for developing and managing driver performance and training. Enforcing safety compliance for our transit transportation program. They will strategically oversee all areas of safety and compliance with respect to Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations and prepare our workforce for our client’s needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe and secure public transportation system for all customers utilizing the service.
- Supervise and direct the daily operational activities of Drivers & Safety Supervisors for Driver Support; make spontaneous decisions; communicate via two-way radio, telephone, fax and writing.
- Ensure safety performance metrics and goals are met.
- Ensure safety/road supervision provides adequate support to the operators and files all paperwork in a timely manner.
- Support the location safety initiatives and help foster our safety culture.
- Mandated reporter of company and MBTA-defined safety and training processes and systems.
- Determine drivers are fit-for-duty and uniform compliance.
- Review monthly KPI results (vehicle accident and work‑related injury performance) determining why variances occur and identify preventative measures in response to each variance.
- Develop and implement safety communication and training programs.
- Attend and present at monthly safety meetings, start‑up meetings and monthly safety committee meetings.
- Finalize investigations of Injuries and Accidents and report in a timely manner.
- Administer Safety programs including coaching, counseling and disciplining of drivers as required.
- Review road inspections to ensure drivers are performing assigned duties correctly and safely and that all job specifications are met.
- Assist in Operations to ensure drivers depart the yard on time.
- Troubleshoot in‑vehicle technology and equipment issues.
- Monitor service through visual checks and other means as available.
- Review all new hire training documents and certifications and make recommendations as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records in order to recall details of events.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing with all levels of personnel.
- Ensure all paperwork (accidents, incidents, first report of injury, etc.) is timely, legible, complete and distributed as required.
- Maintains and demonstrates a helpful, positive, and pleasant attitude toward fellow coworkers, and the customer.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills Required and Physical Demands:
- Thorough knowledge and applicative experience with DOT (FMCSA/FTA) regulations, OSHA (federal/state) regulations, as well as state and local laws.
- Familiar with all applicable safety regulations from EPA (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Incident Management System (NIMS), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Strong written and oral communication skills

Hard Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2-4 years of relevant experience in transportation Public Safety and Supervisor experience preferred
- Must have valid Class D driver's license with a minimum of 2 years driving experience in the U.S.
- Must maintain a DOT (Dept. of Transportation) Medical Card.
Preferred Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Occupational Safety, Psychology, Management, Liberal Studies, or other related degree/experience.
