School Nurse Position

Job Summary

This position assists the Supervisor of Nursing Services in carrying out the district's health program by implementing a comprehensive health services program at a specific school(s). The role of the School Nurse is to provide for the general health and wellbeing of the student population and school community.

Duties and Responsibilities

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved. Duties may vary from position-to-position or school-to-school.

  • Establish and maintain the school health office to deliver comprehensive school health services according to School Nursing Standards of Practice, the state nurse practice act, and departmental procedures and protocols.
  • Provide case management of students with special healthcare needs, including administration of medications and special procedures according to medical orders, School District policy and professional nursing judgment. Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans. Develop and train need-to-know school staff on Emergency Care Plans for students with potentially life-threatening conditions.
  • Provide episodic first aid, emergency medical and behavioral health care to ill or injured students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain communicable disease prevention and control measures in accordance with state regulations, local health department protocols, district policies, department protocol, and nursing professional judgment.
  • Monitor students' compliance with state immunization laws; notifies and provides assistance to parents/guardians to comply with requirements. Maintains comprehensive school health records for each student including immunization records.
  • Conduct state-mandated health and developmental screening.
  • May serve as a member of the school emergency disaster preparedness and response team, or participate in other committees (504 Coordination, Safety Committee, Health Youth Survey, etc.).
  • Provide health information and resources for students, families, and staff at appropriate health literacy and reading levels and in a culturally sensitive fashion. Demonstrate professional conduct and effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication with daily interactions and in emergency situations.
  • Document student health information in the electronic health record according to department guidelines and procedures.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and privacy with consideration to HIPAA and FERPA practices.
  • Collaborate with other school professionals, family, caregivers, community, and healthcare providers to maximize communication and to deliver health and social services to students.
  • Promote a safe and healthy school environment and climate of school connectedness.
  • Promote health and wellness education by serving as a health information resource to students and teachers and conduct district- and state-mandated health training for school staff.
  • Pursue professional development and communicate self-identified learning needs to the nursing supervisor.
  • Perform duties of child abuse and neglect mandated reporting.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities

    Delegate and monitor health care tasks that can be conducted by or delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) according to district policy, the state nurse practice act and using professional judgment as a licensed registered nurse.

    Reporting Relationship

    Reports to the School Principal and Supervisor of Nursing Services.

    Working Conditions

    Working as a registered nurse can be a physically demanding job with frequent interruptions. The degree of physical activity may vary depending on the student population and building environment. Registered nurses may spend their workday on their feet, standing, and walking or sitting. Registered nurses may also need to be able to perform tasks that require bending, stretching, and lifting, or adjusting medical equipment.

    Fine motor dexterity requirements may be necessary for medication administration and injections, putting on gloves, performing medical procedures, work with computerized records, and complete paperwork. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. May be exposed to communicable disease and bodily secretions.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience Current Washington State licensure as a Registered Nurse Current certification in first aid and CPR;
    Current Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/ automated external defibrillator (AED) certification. Pediatric, adolescent, or school nursing experience preferred.
