Job Summary:

This position is designed to promote and maintain the health and well-being of students in the classroom setting to enable them to take full advantage of available educational opportunities. In addition, this position will assist the classroom teacher in meeting the physical and health care needs for medically fragile and special needs students during the school day.

Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training or equivalent is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved. Duties may vary from position-to-position or school-to-school.

  • Provides the necessary medical and nursing care for assigned student and to work closely with classroom teacher(s) to adapt work/homework/materials to support student learning and comprehension.
  • Expected to be an active participant in assigned student's school day, accompany the student on school-based activities or potential field trips held within the school day assignment, and maintain medical equipment and supplies at school for the student as needed.
  • Collaborates with the classroom teacher and building school nurse regarding implementation of 504 Plans, Individual Education Plans, Individual Health Care Plans, Emergency Care Plans, and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • In the event the assigned student will not be attending a full school day, this position may be expected to perform other duties consistent with the assignment.
  • Establish a plan of communication between the building school nurse, parents, and medical provider.
  • Maintain an accurate health record on the assigned student. Document health related activities and treatments as appropriate.
  • May be required to ride the school bus with students or attend field trips occurring during school hours.
  • Other duties as assigned in collaboration with the nursing supervisor.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities

    Delegate and monitor health care tasks that can be conducted by or delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) according to district policy, the state nurse practice act and using professional judgment as a licensed registered nurse.

    Reporting Relationship

    Reports to the School Principal and Supervisor of Nursing Services.

    Working Conditions

    Working as a registered nurse can be a physically demanding job with frequent interruptions. The degree of physical activity may vary depending on the student population and building environment. Registered nurses may spend their workday on their feet, standing, and walking or sitting. Registered nurses may also need to be able to perform tasks that require bending, stretching, and lifting, or adjusting medical equipment.

    Fine motor dexterity requirements may be necessary for medication administration and injections, putting on gloves, performing medical procedures, work with computerized records, and complete paperwork. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. May be exposed to communicable disease and bodily secretions.

    Education and Experience

    Current Washington State licensure as a Registered Nurse

    Current certification in first aid and CPR;
    Current Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/ automated external defibrillator (AED) certification.

    Pediatric, adolescent, or school nursing experience preferred.
