Veterinary Extern - Specialty

Responsibilities

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients.

Externs spend five days a week shadowing, assisting in rooms, performing treatments, and helping in surgery.

Applicants must be third or fourth‑year students of accredited domestic or international veterinary schools, pursuing a DVM, VMD, or foreign equivalent. First and second years are considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

We require a letter of intent and CV, as well as 2–3 letters of recommendation from advisors who can attest to your interest and experience in exotic animal medicine.

• The schedule is generally Sunday through Thursday, but modifications can be made with advanced notice.
• The typical workday is from 7:30 a.m. to around 6 p.m. Students are expected to assist with treatments at 7:30 and attend hospital rounds starting at 8 a.m.
• Students must be available for overnight emergency procedures for at least two of their days with us; schedule flexibility is available if you are present for extended overnight periods.
• Didactic rounds occur on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30–9:30 a.m.
• Dress code: matching scrubs or dressy casual with a lab coat; lab coats or scrub jackets should not be white to promote fear‑free care.
• Students should arrange to have a radiation badge to assist with radiographs. Acquire one from your school's radiology department; absence of a badge will preclude use of the radiology room.
