Deputy Senior Manager

Job Summary:
- Deputy Senior Managers support a Senior Manager in technical, administrative, operational, and personnel management responsibilities associated with assigned teams, projects, clients, and service areas.
- Deputy Senior Managers manage, lead, and evaluate a team of employees including Team Leaders, Associate Team Leaders, Project Managers, and other staff, while collaborating with the staff on the direct Senior Manager’s team.
- Deputy Senior Managers manage staff fulfilling WEST’s collective workload of contracts for services, collaborating with Practice Group Leaders, Client Liaisons, and Quality Manager to deliver high‑quality deliverables.
- Deputy Senior Managers report directly to a Senior Manager and collaborate with Practice Group Leaders, Client Liaisons, Quality Manager, and Business Development Manager to fulfill essential job functions.
- Assist executive leadership in communicating WEST’s mission, core principles, procedures, and processes to all employees; promote overall WEST culture based on honesty, integrity, and professionalism.
- Help team members understand WEST administrative needs, including policy, timesheets, expenses, HR forms, leave, accounting, health and safety, etc.
- Foster strong intra‑ and inter‑office team approaches within WEST; develop strong teams internally and cross‑functionally across career pathways.
- Facilitate consensus‑building managerial approaches and consistency in decision‑making.
- Work with the Business Development Manager, Practice Groups, and Client Liaisons to develop proposals and respond to RFPs appropriate for WEST.
- Maintain productive and mutually beneficial working relationships with clients and partners.
- Contribute to work products and services by managing active WEST projects.
- Work with the Senior Manager to manage the team’s workload, services, and products to meet contractual needs.
- Collaborate with Senior Managers, Practice Groups, and Client Liaisons, as well as other Deputy Senior Managers and Team Leaders to balance staff workloads.
- Ensure on‑time, high‑quality work products with Project Groups, Client Liaisons, and Quality Manager.
- Promote a positive work environment where team members, employees, clients, and partners are treated with respect.
- Provide and maintain the infrastructure and working environment necessary for safe work.
- Evaluate team member performance, oversee quality of performance, and address underperformance.
- Set expectations for high‑quality services and work products in collaboration with WEST’s technical experts, Client Liaisons, and quality team.
- Provide guidance and training to Team Leaders and project managers, coaching staff for growth and maximizing talent.
- Ensure staff are confident, competent, and adequately trained for their responsibilities.
- Encourage staff to pursue satisfying work aligned with WEST’s strategic goals, fostering camaraderie, learning, and loyalty.
- Coordinate hiring, retention, and disciplinary processes in collaboration with the Senior Manager.
- A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental policy, planning, engineering, natural resources, biology, wildlife management, statistics, construction management, business, finance, or related field.
- Four (4) years of experience in environmental consulting with WEST, or eight (8) plus years overall.
- Previous people/personnel management experience.
- Proven leadership and people‑management skills, including coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff.
- Ability to develop cohesive, productive teams.
- Collaboration skills with peers, upper management, and others.
- Strategic thinking and insight into external market forces, competitors, and customers.
- General understanding of finance, budgeting, and balancing billable/non‑billable time.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
