PURPOSE
Under supervision, this position performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of parks and other landscaped areas and related facilities. It is distinguished from the Senior Landscape Maintenance Worker in that the latter class provides work direction to Landscape Maintenance Workers and performs the more complex and difficult tasks in the maintenance and repair of City parks and landscaped areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This description is intended to indicate the essential functions and levels of work difficulty of the position and is not intended to describe in detail all of the position's specific duties and responsibilities nor exclude other duties of similar level or difficulty.? Additionally, it is not intended to limit management's rights to assign, direct, and control the work of employees beyond the essential functions under their supervision.
Fertilizes lawns and plants in City parks and landscaped areas.
Plants annual, perennial and bulb flowers in planters, medians and other landscaped areas.
Controls the growth of weeds in lawn areas, shrubs and flower beds using hand tools and weed eaters.
Picks up and disposes of trash and debris from roadsides, parks and other assigned areas using poker sticks, rakes and brooms.
Mows and edges lawns utilizing lawn mowers and hand and power edgers.
Trims hedges and shrubs with hand shears or powers shears.
Prunes and trims trees, and removes dead trees using handsaws, chain saws, clippers and ladder truck.
Performs routine maintenance and care of grounds keeping equipment and tools.
Plants new or replacement trees, shrubs or turf throughout the City's parks system and landscaped areas.
Sets headstones in the City's cemetery including mixing cement, building forms for cement and finishing cement.
Retains work records as required.
Maintains irrigation sprinklers by cleaning and adjusting heads, digging up and repairing broken lines and altering automatic controls as necessary.
Operates manual sprinkler systems at designated points to irrigate parks and other landscaped areas.
Installs and assists in the repair of irrigation systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in landscape maintenance work.
Note:
An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.
Possess and maintain a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment, forklift certification.
All required licenses and certifications are conditions of employment. Required licenses and certifications must remain valid and in effect throughout incumbency.
Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of use, operation, and maintenance of motorized vehicles and equipment common to the field; operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to safe working practices, policies, standards and procedures related to landscape maintenance.
Skill in using personal computers, facsimile machines, ten-key adding machines, telephones.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor; safely and effectively perform basic landscape maintenance, and repair work; use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the type of work being performed; safely and skillfully operate motorized vehicles and equipment used in the course of work; understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work from sketches, blueprints, and diagrams;
maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written reports of work performed; estimate time and materials for completion of projects; establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
