Position: WATER & WASTEWATER MAINT WORKER

Job Title

Under supervision, works as a crew member performing semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of water distribution, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.

Essential Functions

Conducts routine preventive maintenance inspections of water pump station, water reservoirs and wastewater lift stations to ensure proper operation of pumps and pump motors.

Assists in the repair of wastewater lift stations and water pump stations including the rebuilding of pumps and motors, installation of mechanical equipment; and inspection of sewer manholes to ensure proper flow of wastewater.

Assist with greasing and lubricating pumps and pumps motors, cleans wet wells, and cleans out impellers of rags and other materials.

Cleans the wastewater collection system of debris such as grit, sand, roots, and rocks using a water jet rodder or mechanical rodding equipment.

Disassembles, cleans, repairs, recalibrates, reassembles and tests water meters to ensure accuracy within the American Water Works Association guidelines.

Installs water meters at residences and businesses, initiates service and prepares and maintains appropriate records.

Maintains effective written and oral communication including the use of two-way radios, cellular phone, and email.

Installs, inspects, repairs, operates, tests and maintains fire hydrants.

Maintains and inspects tools, equipment, and fleet that is clean, serviceable, and ensures safe and efficient operating conditions.

Identifies and repairs leaks in the water distribution and wastewater collection system.

Installs water services and wastewater laterals.

Operates and maintains CCTV equipment for sewer pipeline inspections.

Follows all safety rules established by the City.

Performs data collection utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) and updates person responsible for maintaining the ArcGIS of any changes to current records.

Keeps accurate records of maintenance performed.

Initiates service requests for repairs to infrastructure, equipment, fleet, and facilities. Ensures follow-up actions are carried out.

Advises customers of disruption of service and necessity for maintenance and repairs.

Responds to and resolves a variety of customer inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Possession of or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment a valid Class A State of Nevada Motor Vehicle Operator's License with tanker endorsement, and

Must possess or have ability to obtain within twenty-four (24) months of appointment, a Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate.

All required licenses and certifications are conditions of employment. Required licenses and certifications must remain valid and in effect throughout incumbency.

Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Functions, characteristics and proper use and care of hand tools such as shovels, drills, power saws, and torque wrenches, motorized equipment, safe working practices, general math calculations.

Skill in using computers, tablets, smart phones, and other devices to effectively utilize programs such as ArcGIS, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for communication, data input, and reports.

Ability to perform routine mechanical maintenance and repair of water meters, pumps and motors. Install and repair water, raw water and wastewater mains and irrigation systems. Establish and maintain effective working relations with others. Locate valves and water/sewer mains from maps of drawings. Communicate effectively with others. Maintain records and prepare reports. Take initiative and work as a productive team member.

Work effectively to meet the needs of the community and organization. Notify supervisor concerning the need for major repairs of equipment. Report progress of assigned projects. Pay attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks. Demonstrate professional behavior that supports and enhances team behavior, performance, and productivity. Monitor work conditions to determine compliance with prescribed operating and safety procedures.

Operate and care for equipment used for the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater utility infrastructure. Locate valves and water/sewer mains from maps of drawings Read and comprehend operation and maintenance manuals. Communicate effectively with others. Maintain records and prepare reports.
