Overview
As the Associate Director, Energy Storage, you will be a key commercial leader responsible for the development, refinement, and execution of the company's commercial and investment strategy for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in energy markets across the U.S. The company's current BESS portfolio includes approximately 2 GW of storage projects in the pipeline, geographically across 12 states. You will serve as the commercial lead responsible for revenue strategy, market prioritization, contracting, and value optimization for standalone and hybrid storage assets, while collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders to shape the company's long-term storage platform.
Key Responsibilities- Drive a process to develop a strategy for the company’s BESS efforts in the U.S. Facilitate meetings with the Executive Team, the Origination team, and other internal stakeholders to identify key priorities and opportunities for BESS.
- Integrate knowledge of all facets of BESS systems, conduct market research, and engage external subject matter experts to fill gaps in the internal team’s knowledge that affect the commercial strategy for BESS.
- The resulting data-driven business plan will identify priority markets, characteristics of successful BESS projects, revenue models, and the company’s competitive positioning; define revenue pathways, evaluate merchant and contracted revenue stacks, and outline a market-entry and investment strategy across ISOs/RTOs to maximize value creation.
- Evaluate BESS project opportunities and ensure commercial alignment with the business plan by collaborating with SMEs across the organization.
- Co-locate BESS projects with the company’s renewable energy projects in development and operation where appropriate.
- Develop and implement creative commercial revenue solutions that capitalize on new and existing market opportunities/products, including leading commercial structuring activities (capacity contracts, tolling arrangements, hybrid offtake structures, and optimization service agreements) for development-stage and operating assets.
- Lead day-to-day activities such as market analysis, revenue stack optimization, customer engagement, financial modeling with the Finance team, risk assessment, and due diligence for potential acquisitions or partnerships.
- Build and maintain commercial counter party relationships (utilities, data centers, hyperscalers, traders, aggregators, and corporate buyers).
- Prepare and present commercial recommendations, revenue analyses, and risk assessments to senior leadership and the Investment Committee.
- Develop and deliver strategy memos, economic justifications, and siting guidance for Development and Acquisitions teams.
- Collaborate with M&A, Development, Finance, Legal, Origination, Engineering, and Procurement teams.
- Provide technical support to BESS projects, including procurement coordination for BESS equipment and BOS/System Integrator, technical review of specifications and SOWs, and vendor engagement for RFPs.
- Participate in weekly alignment meetings and contribute to preconstruction deliverables (cost estimates, schedules, preliminary designs).
- Ensure commercial decisions align with technical design choices, augmentation strategies, and FEOC/IRA compliance considerations.
- Join the Commercial team, reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer, and collaborate with cross-functional teams across M&A, Development, Finance, Legal, Origination, Engineering, and Procurement.
- In this high-visibility role, act as the commercial owner of storage investments, guiding end-to-end value creation from strategy through contracting, optimization, and long-term revenue planning.
- Demonstrate the ability to be both strategic and tactical, with attention to detail and an understanding of longer-term impacts on decisions.
- Travel as needed (approximately two trips per month).
