Overview
The College of Arts & Sciences at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Academic Advisor position. Academic Advisors work in a multi-disciplinary “neighborhood” team setting to assist students in planning for—and making informed decisions about—areas of study, intended college outcomes, and post-baccalaureate plans. They educate the whole student through a developmental advising approach and implement advising strategies and interventions to enhance performance and persistence throughout their time on campus.
They help students assess interests, values, and academic skills, support long-term degree planning, course registration, and graduation timeline planning, and guide students to navigate the university’s systems, processes, and policies. Advisors also provide co-curricular guidance and referrals and engage students in workshops, presentations, campus events, and other engagement activities. Advisors stay up to date on curricular requirements and policies and provide accurate information to support exploration and academic engagement across the college.
A successful Academic Advisor demonstrates an agile mentality, enthusiastic attitude, and passion for working with students and colleagues. They are highly relational, comfortable engaging with students in one-on-one and large-group settings using various outreach methods. They consistently exhibit a student-support orientation and strong communication skills. The role emphasizes a developmental advising approach focused on relationship-building, exploration, goal setting, and individual success.
