Position: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Director

Job Summary

The NMR Laboratory Director provides strategic, scientific, and operational leadership for the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy facility. This position oversees the management, maintenance, and advancement of NMR instrumentation and related research infrastructure in support of faculty, students, and external collaborators. The Director ensures high-quality data acquisition, user training, safety compliance, and efficient laboratory operations while fostering a collaborative, service‑oriented research environment.

The Director works closely with faculty investigators to support cutting‑edge research across disciplines including chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, and related fields. Responsibilities include instrument oversight and troubleshooting, implementation of new methodologies, user training and consultation, data interpretation support, and long‑term strategic planning for facility growth and modernization. The role also includes budget management, vendor coordination, grant support, and supervision of technical staff.

The role also includes the teaching of up to one course per year on NMR spectroscopy.

The successful candidate will demonstrate deep expertise in NMR spectroscopy, strong problem‑solving and analytical skills, and a commitment to advancing research excellence through shared instrumentation. This position requires the ability to balance high‑level technical leadership with responsive, user‑centered service in a dynamic academic environment.

We offer a competitive salary and benefit package. Starting salary will be within the posted range of $100,000–$120,000 depending upon accomplishments, qualifications, and years of experience in a comparable position.

What We Require
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field (e.g., Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, etc.)
  • 2 or more years of relevant experience beyond terminal degree
  • Experience with solid‑state and multinuclear NMR, and with modern pulse sequences
  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on NMR instruments
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience with advanced console and probe repairs, especially Varian and Bruker instruments
  • Data management experience
