1st Grade Lower School Teacher

Shining Mountain Waldorf School has two lower school rotations, one for first through fifth grade and one for sixth through eighth grade. This position will begin in first grade and rotate through the first five grades. A bachelor’s degree or more advanced degree and Waldorf training are required. Experience in Waldorf classroom teaching is preferred.

Shining Mountain Waldorf School, located in Boulder, Colorado, is a pre‑kindergarten through twelfth‑grade school offering a comprehensive Waldorf education. The lower school curriculum includes two world languages, woodworking, handwork, movement, instrumental and orchestral music, chorus, and a wide range of fine arts. The high school offers a robust STEAM program, extensive fine and practical arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery, printmaking, digital arts, photography, blacksmithing), and a vibrant choir and theater program.

Job Duties Teaching Responsibilities
  • Teach morning lesson curriculum from 7:45 am to 3:30 pm Monday‑Friday following the SMWS academic calendar.
  • Serve as the class teacher, responsible for holding their class and teaching the morning curriculum.
  • Teach subject classes—either to their own class or to other classes—depending on skill set.
  • Teach in either the 1‑5 or 6‑8 rotations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and the School Director to maintain an overall vision of curricular expectations across grades.
  • Participate in two committees, two tasks, the weekly department meeting, and the weekly plenary meeting.
Non‑Teaching Responsibilities
  • Share equitable responsibility for arrival, dismissal, snack, lunch, and recess duties.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and attractive classroom.
  • Care for classroom resources, tools, and equipment, and replenish supplies.
  • Guide and supervise students through daily schedule transitions.
  • Build healthy relationships with parents and hold 4‑5 parent evenings each year.
  • Send parents a weekly email with pertinent classroom updates.
  • Attend all festivals, evening class performances, and all day and overnight field trips.
  • Complete an end‑of‑year report for each student.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of four years of teaching experience.
  • Waldorf teaching and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with students and colleagues, and an interest in active community engagement.
  • Strong commitment to equity and inclusion.

Bachelor’s degree in education or specified subject area preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Engage in outdoor activities on campus, playgrounds, parks, trails, hiking, walking, etc.
  • Coordinate and attend class trips that may involve driving the school bus, along with camping and other outdoor events.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds, bend, and stretch regularly.
  • Move across classrooms and handle boxes and supplies each year.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Demonstrate teaching capacity in experiential and project‑based learning.
  • Commit to continued learning in Waldorf and general educational trends, research‑based learning models, educational technology, curriculum development, learning standards, multicultural education, and best practices.
  • Possess organizational and computer skills.
Employment Details

This is a full‑time position with a comprehensive benefit package.

Salary and Benefits
  • Waldorf‑trained base salary: $53,720.00, with consideration for experience.
