JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Paraprofessional - Sign Language Interpreter FLSA STATUS:Non-Exempt

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Sign Language Interpreter will provide sign language interpreting / transliterating services for deaf / hard of hearing students, as well as assist with instruction in the classroom under the direction of licensed teachers.

REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED

Must have meet one of the following two qualifications:

2 years of higher education

An associate's degree or higher

License / Certification Required

American Sign Language Certification or ability to obtain

Work Experience Required

Experience working with children with special needs preferred

Other

Skills and Abilities

Required

Knowledge of childhood development and behavior management is preferred.

Basic computer skills preferred.

First Aid and CPR certification required. (Provided by district)

Knowledge of and ability to utilize various signing systems including, but not limited to, American Sign Language (ASL)

Strong communication skills, both orally and written

Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions

KEY FUNCTIONS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

  • Provide interpretation, translation, or communication facilitation based on the student's educational and language level and IEP requirements.
  • Adapt support approach depending on the setting (e.g., direct instruction, peer group work, tutoring).
  • Report notable academic or behavioral observations to appropriate staff and share student-specific hearing loss needs (e.g., seating, lighting).
  • Collaborate with the IEP team to assess and improve communication strategies and access for students.
  • Implement approved curriculum accommodations and modifications.
  • Work cooperatively with general and special education staff, administrators, and external partners.
  • Support staff with strategies for effective instruction and communication.
  • Assist with data collection, record keeping, and documentation in accordance with FERPA and confidentiality requirements.
  • Participate in professional development and district/building-level trainings or committees.
  • Reinforce instructional goals, encourage appropriate social behavior, and support skill development.
  • Help manage classroom routines, materials, and student behavior to support a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitor and document student progress and behavior for educational assessments and reports.
  • Maintain effective, confidential communication with parents, students, and staff.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and respectful conduct to foster a positive and productive workplace culture.

  • Participate in training and professional development activities as required by the school district.
