Job Summary

Postdoctoral Associate/Research Associate position focused on large‑signal microwave‑frequency electromagnetic measurements and modeling to evaluate advanced materials such as magnetic composites. Measurements include oscilloscope and vector‐network analyzer characterization of materials and devices, including under high‑power conditions. The role connects measurements to large‑signal models of materials and devices. This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) within the Guided Wave Electromagnetics Group at NIST.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform microwave‑frequency measurements using tools such as a vector network analyzer and/or oscilloscope with a high‑power modulated signal source.
  • Perform near‑field and/or thermal imaging measurements with scanning experimental setups.
  • Conduct data analysis, uncertainty analysis, and modeling of material‑loaded transmission lines and bulk fixtures.
Requirements
  • Postdoctoral Associate:
PhD in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or related field with 0–4 years of post‑doctoral experience.
  • Research Associate:
PhD in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or related field with 5+ years of post‑doctoral experience.
Qualifications
  • Experience with electromagnetic modeling, including finite‑element and/or circuit modeling.
  • Proficiency with scripting (e.g., reading files, performing calculations, and plotting results) in Python, MATLAB, or another scientific programming language.
  • Proficiency with mathematical techniques used in physical sciences and engineering, especially linear algebra, differential equations, and statistics.
  • Knowledge of the physical principles of electromagnetism, circuits, and heat transport.
  • Aptitude for laboratory work, including assembling instruments and performing electrical or electromagnetic measurements.
Salaries and Benefits
  • Salary range for Postdoctoral Associate: $74,000 – $108,000 annually.
  • Salary range for Research Associate: $78,000 – $135,000 annually.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, retirement plans, paid time off, tuition assistance for employees and dependents, and an ECO Pass for local transit.
