Project Manager – Flatirons Campus (Boulder, Colorado)

Overview

The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) seeks a seasoned Project Manager to lead ARIES capital projects within the MTES directorate on the Flatirons Campus. The role involves comprehensive planning and execution of infrastructure upgrades for advanced grid research platforms, collaborating with researchers, safety staff, site operators, acquisition services, finance, and research operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead planning and execution of ARIES-IESS projects following NLR project management standards and processes.
  • Establish milestones, track progress, and monitor adherence to baseline plans.
  • Support procurement needs and early identification of schedule and budget risks.
  • Develop and implement mitigation plans for identified risks.
  • Provide status reports on projects to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Report metrics and flags on project performance for timely decision‑making.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to ensure successful project execution.
  • Review medium‑voltage electrical design packages for compliance and reliability.
  • Guide technical reviews of designs, planning documents, and execution strategies.
Basic Qualifications
  • PhD with 9+ years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree with 12+ years of relevant experience, or Bachelor’s Degree with 14+ years of relevant experience (equivalent to education/experience).
  • Expert knowledge of project‑management principles, practices, and standards.
  • Expert understanding of technical fields related to power systems, renewable generation, energy storage, hydrogen systems, data centers, and advanced measurement platforms.
  • Exceptional ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, conflict‑resolution, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Required Qualifications
  • Proficiency in capital project governance and compliance.
  • Leadership in regulated federal environments and infrastructure modernization planning.
  • Advanced financial acumen and cost‑management expertise.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Expert knowledge of electrical systems, grid modernization, and integration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with in DOE or other federal government environments.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Familiarity with federal acquisition regulations and DOE project requirements.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and grid integration best practices.
  • Electrical engineering degree preferred.
Salary Range

$120,400 – $216,700 per year (based on full‑time 40 hours per week)
