Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and hands‑on Professional Research Assistant to support laboratory operations, experimental testing, and mechanical systems troubleshooting in a research environment using hydraulic systems, actuators, and shake table/centrifuge applications. This position is ideal for an experienced mechanical engineering professional who enjoys solving technical problems, working directly with equipment, and supporting applied research activities in academia. The role is laboratory based, fully on‑site, with no travel or overtime requirements.
It starts as a 50% FTE (part‑time) appointment, with the possibility of full‑time conversion based on funding and workload.
Technical Operations & Troubleshooting (≈60%)
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair and maintain laboratory mechanical systems and equipment, including hydraulic systems, servo‑hydraulic actuators, shake tables, centrifuge‑based experimental systems, mechanical loading and testing equipment.
- Identify root causes of equipment malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
- Perform preventive maintenance and equipment calibration activities.
- Coordinate with laboratory staff and researchers to ensure safe and reliable operation of testing systems.
Research & Experimental Testing Support (≈40%)
- Assist academic and industrial research with test setup and execution.
- Configure sensors, instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
- Support specimen preparation, fixture setup, and test operation.
- Maintain laboratory readiness and support safe testing procedures.
- Contribute practical engineering insight during experimental planning and execution.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of hands‑on technical experience in industry, research laboratories, or academic environments.
- Demonstrated experience and technical knowledge with hydraulic systems, mechanical actuators, experimental testing equipment, and heavy mechanical systems or laboratory infrastructure.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Experience working in laboratory, industrial, or field‑testing environments.
- Ability to independently solve mechanical and operational problems.
- Experience with shake table systems and/or centrifuge testing facilities.
- Familiarity with servo‑hydraulic control systems.
- Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and experimental operations.
- Experience supporting applied research or university laboratory operations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, researchers, and industry partners.
Salary range: $51,000 – $62,000 per year.
