Siemens Electrification & Automation delivers energy distribution systems and solutions nationwide. We power today’s grids and invest in future grid innovations. We’re seeking authoritative engineers in power transmission and distribution, specializing in substation automation and protection relay engineering, to join our Power Systems Engineering team.
We are looking for experienced Power System Protection Engineers. This position will be based at either our Wendell, North Carolina headquarters or our site in Boulder, Colorado.

- Design, configure, and test protective relay systems
for sophisticated power systems and substations, ensuring high reliability and system integrity. - Complete
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)and
Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)—skilled in preparing comprehensive test procedures, commissioning scripts, and leading successful project delivery. - Hands-on experience with advanced
relay test equipment
such as
Omicron
and
Doble
, with deep knowledge of protection schemes for transmission, distribution, and industrial applications. - Develop
and implement protection and control schemes
that align with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer-specific needs. - Be a proactive technical leader and collaborator, trusted to
guide project teams
, solve complex challenges, and get results across all phases of the project lifecycle—from initial design to final commissioning. - Experienced serving as the
primary technical collaborate with clients
, providing on‑site support, troubleshooting, and commissioning expertise with a focus on performance and customer satisfaction.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or computer engineering.
- Five (5) or more years of engineering experience in power systems
protection engineering. - Project Technical Lead experience.
- Applied knowledge of Power Protection on:
Overcurrent / Over-Under voltage, Transformer Differential, Motor Protection, High and Low Impedance Busbar Differential, Generator Protection, MV transfer schemes and reverse interlocking schemes. - Ability to read and fully understand DC and AC schematics, three- and one-line diagrams for Medium and/or High Voltage substations systems.
- Advanced knowledge of at least one of the automation products and associated software from vendors such as Siemens, GE, SEL or ABB
- Experience implementing communication protocols such as IEC
61850 (MMS/GOOSE/SMV), DNP, Modbus, IEC
60870-5-101/103/104, Profinet, Profibus, OPC, for power automation systems. - Substation control and protection commissioning experience.
- Experience in Factory and Site testing of protection relays
- Ability and willingness to travel 50 to 70% depending on business need, project assignments and requirements.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without sponsorship now or in the future.
