Referral Specialist (Part-time)

Salary Range: $18.00 To $23.60 Annually

The Referral Specialist plays a key role in supporting patient care by coordinating, prioritizing, and communicating referral needs within a community health care clinic. This position ensures that patients receive timely access to specialty services by scheduling referrals, attaching all required documentation, and maintaining accurate, up‑to‑date information in the electronic health record. The Referral Specialist collaborates closely with providers, patients, and external partners to resolve referral issues, track outstanding orders, and close referral loops to support continuity of care.

In addition, this role contributes to preventive screening efforts, assists with prior authorizations, and upholds the clinic’s mission, values, and commitment to patient-centered service.

A day in the life of a Referral Specialist includes:

  • Scheduling referrals and sending with all necessary documents attached.
  • Follow up phone calls to patients -Outstanding labs, procedures, referrals, etc.
  • Communicating with providers to correct any referral errors or necessary changes.
  • Tracking referrals and closing the referral loop.
  • Inputting patient health information (orders, referrals, etc.) into EHR system.
  • Preventative Screening orders & tracking.
  • Prior Authorization (imaging).
Compensation and Benefits
  • $18.00-$23.60/hour, depending on experience and certifications

Qualifications
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • At least one year of experience in an ambulatory healthcare setting desired
  • BLS certification
  • Ability to travel between clinics as needed.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with team members, patients, families, and others.
  • Ability to utilize a computer for time keeping, documenting electronic medical records, and to complete follow-up tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

This position requires long periods of standing and walking, sitting at a computer, the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 35 pounds, etc. Employees are exposed to blood, body fluids, and other occupational hazards, and are required to complete mandatory vaccines, such as Tdap, Hep A, Hep B, MMR, Varicella, and the yearly flu vaccine.
