Job Description:

Clinical Ladder participation is voluntary. Salary adjustments are determined by program eligibility, advancement level, and organizational guidelines.

Responds to code situations within the department.

Floats to other surgical service units as patient or census needs require. Provides safe and effective nursing care. Uses proper procedures in tissue handling, providing exposure in the operative field, use of instrumentation, suturing, and provision of hemostasis. Administers medications, treatments, and diagnostic measures as delegated by the physician. Maintains thorough and complete records of each patient’s procedure according to established standards.

Cares for and handles specimens according to hospital and lab policy. Prepares and maintains sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment, and assists with cleaning rooms and restocking supplies. Makes sound judgments in referring situations beyond ability or scope to the proper person. Participates in in-service education programs, including attending meetings, orientation, and continuous training, and precept new students/nurses as needed.

Functions in peri-operative nursing practice as both a first assistant, scrub, and circulating nurse.

Maintains knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking, and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements. [Required]

  • Enhanced knowledge of a wide breath of surgical procedures, human anatomy and surgical techniques [Required]

  • The ability to work under stressful circumstances [Required]
  • Proficiency in locating Saphenous Vein using ultrasound and proficiency in harvesting vein to be used for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery [Preferred]
  • Proficiency in Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH) as well as training and proficiency in preparation of the harvested vein to be used as bypass conduit per surgeon’s preference [Preferred]
  • Proficiency in Open Vein Harvesting when Endoscopic Vein Harvesting is contraindicated due to emergent situation where time does not permit EVH [Preferred]
  • Proficiency in Radial Artery Harvesting via Endoscopic and/or Open Surgical Technique as well as proficiency in preparing Radial artery to be used as bypass conduit [Preferred]
  • Proficiency in assisting surgeon during open heart procedures with opening of the chest, assisting surgeon while establishing Cardiopulmonary Bypass, assisting during Bypass surgery, assisting of valvular repair/replacement including minimally invasive approaches, assisting in weaning from Cardiopulmonary Bypass and closure of the chest [Preferred]
  • Proficiency in assisting Surgeon during emergent situations requiring Cardiopulmonary resuscitation [Preferred]
