Employment Specialist

Overview

The Payroll and Employment Services team within the MAPS office supports the Colorado School of Mines community by providing efficient and accurate payroll and employment operations. The Employment Specialist plays a key role in fostering process efficiency, reducing financial and administrative burdens, and maintaining system integrity and exceptional customer service.

• Full life‑cycle management of employment and payroll information for all employees, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations.
• Process and review all employee‑related transactions (new hire, job change, compensation, termination, etc.) in Workday for accuracy and compliance.
• Enter supplemental data for accurate employment records, payroll processing, and benefit administration.
• Participate in meetings related to Employment Services, Payroll Operations, and HR to stay informed on system issues and projects.
• Identify and communicate areas of concern regarding compliance and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure departmental processes follow segregation of duties and control guidelines.
• Collaborate with the team to define procedures and propose procedural changes to enhance service delivery.
• Conduct audits, document results, and assist with 1042‑S administration in the Sprintax system.
• Work with the Employment Lead on corrections and training MAPS staff.
• Analyze transactional processes, identify efficiency opportunities, and develop metrics to assess service levels and performance.
• Contribute to a productive, efficient, and effective work environment.

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Knowledge of HR principles and the employment life cycle.
• Experience managing multiple tasks and prioritizing workload in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Understanding of higher education culture and governance.
• Demonstrated focus on customer service and compliance.
• Experience with transferring knowledge to co‑workers in a collaborative manner.
• Strong analytical skills and an understanding of how metrics drive innovation and service quality.
• Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership.
• Experience with Workday preferred but not required.

Annual salary: $56,485 – $58,000 (range depends on education, training, experience, and role complexity).
