Job Summary
Help protect lives around the world as our next COMET Program Specialist II! We are a mission‑driven team at the intersection of science and international development, with opportunities to engage directly with partners across the globe. This role supports COMET's mission to train meteorologists and emergency managers in underserved regions and small island developing states. You will own the full lifecycle of international logistics—procurement, customs coordination, and supply chain management—to ensure field teams have the critical equipment and supplies needed.
Key Responsibilities Inventory Management- Conduct periodic physical inventory audits to reconcile records with actual stock.
- Coordinate purchases following UCAR and program policy.
- Research and implement modern inventory tools such as QR code systems, barcode scanning, and inventory management software.
- Monitor political and technical climate to anticipate and respond to program demands.
- Contribute to reports on station pricing and key inventory metrics.
- Develop and maintain shipment material templates and processes, in collaboration with instrument engineers.
- Pack shipments; conduct pre‑shipment visual inspections.
- Ensure accurate shipping information and coordinate customs paperwork with recipients and brokers.
- Maintain a database of all COMET shipments and report on key data points.
- Lead bi‑weekly shipping meetings and maintain the shipment calendar.
- Build and maintain a country‑specific customs database.
- Identify local procurement opportunities in host countries and collaborate with Engineering to resolve sourcing gaps.
- Develop and improve user‑facing tools and resources for external partners to source and order materials.
- Lead packaging strategy to evaluate and improve COMET's approach, implement sustainable packaging, and refine based on partner feedback.
- Contribute to sustainability and impact reporting on supply chain efficiency.
- Operate a 3D printer to fabricate custom station parts.
- Represent COMET at workshops, conferences, and other external events.
- Contribute to reports, publications, and social media content.
- Bachelor's degree in science, education, public administration, or a related field.
- 2 years of relevant program experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including logistics or supply chain management.
- Knowledge of inventory management and supply chains, ideally in an international context.
- Advanced proficiency in Google Sheets or Excel, including building complex user‑friendly tools.
- Experience with inventory management systems and best practices, including QR code/barcode systems or asset tagging.
- Familiarity with supply chain and logistics, ideally international shipping.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to produce clear documentation.
- Experience working with national and international partners and stakeholders.
- Ability to translate between engineering/operational needs and partner‑facing tools.
- Skill in preparing technical and administrative reports.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to independently manage moderate‑complex work.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.
- Experience implementing or overhauling an inventory system.
- Experience with in‑country or international procurement in low‑income or emerging economy contexts.
- Knowledge of customs regulations and international shipping compliance.
- Experience with packaging design, kitting, or parts organization systems.
This position permits in‑person and/or hybrid work (3 days in‑person, 2 days remote). All positions must be performed within the U.S., excluding U.S. Territories.
