Facilities Management at the University of Colorado, Boulder is currently accepting applications for a Recycling Collections Crew position. This role will set up, maintain and collect all types of recyclable, compostable and other materials from central sites on the entire campus via designated routes to ensure materials are diverted into the proper streams. The role will ensure that proper signage, stickers and grade sheets are available to help prevent contamination at each site and will maintain records of materials collected at each site.

They will work on a crew with two other employees, and operate a ¾ ton box van to transport materials once collected from facilities. Additionally, they will organize drop off sites, maintain and clean recycling equipment, maintain the facility, and perform special pick-ups.

Responsibilities
  • Identify acceptable and non-acceptable materials for recycling and instruct personnel in the area on how to properly recycle.
  • Review and plan daily route stops to satisfy the requirements of the building users based on building needs.
  • Determine the need for additional and special pickups of recyclables based on personal observations and verify verbal requests from building users.
  • Decide if material at each individual site is recyclable, go through Property Disposal Services, or if the material should be disposed of in the trash.
  • Provide on-call service for special pick-ups and deliveries of recycling and solid waste items on and off campus. Maintain records of special pick-ups on route sheets.
  • Assist in training new employees on route via proper procedures, guidelines and safety protocols.
  • Notifies supervisor or lead worker of safety incidents, near misses and all potential hazards. Maintains safe work practices, participates in department safety meetings and completes all assigned trainings.
  • Maintain Central Collection Sites, Enclosures and Cabinets:
    Assess and determine the need to replace or repair old or broken recycling containers then follow through by replacing or repairing the containers.
  • Clean enclosures every other week (more frequently if requested). Clean cabinets at least once per month (and as requested).
  • Recycling bins and cabinets can un-expectantly break and must be repaired or replaced. Position replaces broken carts and advises supervisor if more major repairs are needed.
  • Position also recommends modification and improvement of recycling equipment.
  • Data Collections:
    Maintain route records by recording amounts of all recyclable collected. Maintain simple fuel, travel and mileage records as well as vehicle inspection sheets.
  • Note when daily route sheets are missing certain stops on the route. Position must write them in and advise supervisor to make the change on the route sheet. Position must also write in any special pickups from areas as requested/scheduled by supervisor.
  • Vehicles and Equipment Maintenance:
    Maintain, clean, perform minor inspections, check fluid levels, and lubricate equipment and vehicles.
  • Position decides when to complete minor periodic maintenance on vehicles (fluid/lubrication checks). In addition, this position recommends the need for maintenance on equipment and vehicles that needs to be performed by professional technicians.
What You Should Know
  • These in-person positions are eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.
  • The work schedule will be 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday from 5:00 am - 3:30 pm. May require weekend and shift work due to special events, projects or scheduling issues.
What We Can Offer
  • The annual salary for this position is $39,852. These positions are eligible for a shift differential.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.
