Summary:

The Sustainability & Energy Officer provides district wide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for Boulder Valley School District’s sustainability and energy programs in support of the district’s Sustainability Plan, Board policy, Strategic Plan, and healthy learning environments. Leads the district’s commitment to integrate sustainable practices, including knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, into BVSD’s physical place, educational programs, and organizational culture. Responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of district sustainability goals related to energy, water, waste, renewables, greenhouse gas reduction, indoor environmental quality, and resource conservation.

Oversees utility budgeting, data analysis, sustainability performance metrics, and related capital and operational initiatives. Coordinates and leads sustainability committees and actively engages students, employees, families, and community partners in advancing regenerative sustainability. Provides oversight of district electric vehicle charging infrastructure and supports long-term planning for transportation and site electrification.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead, implement, monitor, assess, update, and report on the district Sustainability Plan, associated Board policy, and related district sustainability priorities. Ensure alignment with the District Strategic Plan, Facilities Master Plan, and other district operational and planning efforts. Serve as the lead staff member supporting the District Sustainability Advisory Committee and other relevant committees, design teams, and leadership groups. Prepare regular updates and reports for district leadership and the Board of Education.
  • Collect, analyze, monitor, benchmark, and manage district utility and sustainability data, including electricity, natural gas, water, irrigation, sewer, waste, recycling, composting, renewables, greenhouse gas emissions, and related resource consumption and costs. Oversee utility dashboards, metering, interval data systems, and sustainability performance metrics. Prepare regular reports and recommendations to support data-informed decision making and continuous improvement.
  • Identify, develop, and implement district wide strategies, standards, and initiatives to improve sustainability performance in areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, greenhouse gas reduction, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, renewable energy, sustainable purchasing, and sustainable operations. Provide recommendations to district leadership, principals, and other decision makers regarding sustainability priorities and investments.
  • Develop, administer, and monitor the district’s utility and sustainability-related budgets. Oversee forecasting, cost control, financial analysis, and accountability for utilities and related sustainability initiatives. Negotiate and manage contracts, purchase orders, service agreements, and vendor relationships related to utility services, waste programs, sustainability projects, and associated operational needs.
