Stewards VISTA:
Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative Year 1

Mountain Range Heritage Initiative (MRHI) is a grassroots nonprofit based in Alma, Colorado, a remote mountain town at 10,500 feet in the Mosquito Range. Since 2007, MRHI has worked to protect high-elevation ecosystems that support rare alpine plant communities and critical watershed resources. This region is a biodiversity hotspot, but increasing recreation, mineral development, and off-road vehicle use threaten its fragile landscapes.

MRHI plays a vital role as the only local conservation organization serving residents who rely on these lands for recreation, natural resources, and drinking water. Located just over the Continental Divide from Breckenridge and a few hours from Denver, Alma offers a rural, close-knit community with access to both outdoor adventure and nearby urban amenities. Living here means adapting to a rugged climate while enjoying unparalleled natural beauty.

The VISTA member will support MRHI’s next phase of growth by developing systems to strengthen partnerships and expand community engagement efforts. Responsibilities include program development, volunteer management systems, resource development, and organizational capacity building. We are seeking a motivated, adaptable individual with strong communication skills, creativity, and a passion for conservation and rural communities. This role offers hands‑on experience, professional development, and mentorship.

For more information, visit MRHI’s website or contact the organization directly. Candidates relocating should be prepared for high‑altitude living, limited services, and a rewarding, community‑centered lifestyle.
