Position: TEMPORARY Lead & NON Lead Aquatic Invasive Species Monitoring Crew– Grand Junction, CO.

Lead & Non-Lead Inspector

Temporary position (9 months or less). Pay $18.50–$19.50 per hour. Employment starts 04/06/2026 through 11/06/2026.

Position posted by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (Colorado Parks and Wildlife). The mission is to develop, preserve, and enhance the state’s natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future citizens and visitors. Responsibilities

Conduct aquatic nuisance species (ANS) surveys using standardized scientific protocols throughout Colorado. Monitor zebra mussels, quagga mussels, New Zealand mudsnails, and Eurasian watermilfoil; map infestations and population levels. Assist with baseline mapping of aquatic plants, mollusks, crayfish, and other invertebrates. Perform water‑quality monitoring. Maintain detailed records and follow strict field protocols, including the use of state‑owned equipment.

Work independently and as part of a team on lakes, reservoirs, streams, and rivers. Interact professionally with the public on behalf of the Invasive Species Program. Travel Monday through Thursday weekly with overnight camping (some nights may be in motels). Work in inclement weather, on/off boats, and in backcountry settings. Own reliable camping equipment required.

Assist the Early Detection & Rapid Response (EDRR) Specialist and Invasive Species Program Manager with rapid‑response efforts that arise from the sampling and monitoring program.

Lead

Specific Duties
  • Serve as lead communicator between the EDRR Specialist, ANS Laboratory, and crew.
  • Act as primary decision‑maker in the field with limited supervision.
  • Ensure crew safety and report violations.
  • Maintain respectful crew environment and manage conflict when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with State ANS Sampling and Monitoring Manual procedures.
  • Follow decontamination procedures per official state watercraft inspection and decontamination standards.
  • Maintain and report equipment status.
  • Perform ArcGIS Field Maps data collection, processing, and QA/QC.
  • Produce maps, analyze data using ArcGIS Pro, and write technical reports.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Age 16 or older.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and Google Suite).
  • Willingness to be flexible with the weekday work schedule.
  • Extensive travel with overnight stays, including camping.
  • Ability to drive long hours and remain alert.
  • Ability to work closely in small crews for long hours in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work in and around water.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in natural resources, botany, fisheries, wildlife, or related field, or at least one year of completed coursework toward a degree.
  • Experience leading field crews, especially for the Lead Technician.
  • Experience with data entry.
  • Experience conducting biological field surveys, especially aquatics and/or water quality, including species identification.
  • Experience with zebra mussel, quagga mussel, New Zealand mudsnail, Eurasian watermilfoil, or other invasive species.
  • Experience boating and/or trailering; knowledge of boat and trailer anatomy; ability to launch and land in inclement weather; ability to tow trailers on highways and steep mountain roads.
  • Experience with ArcGIS software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and multitask.
Additional Requirements

Employee may be asked to camp in rustic settings and must provide own camping equipment and gear during biological field work.

Compliance and Administrative Information

Workers operating a state‑owned vehicle must maintain a valid driver license and a safe driving record in accordance with the DNR Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive. Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed for those assigned or required to use a fleet vehicle.
