About the Role

Alta is seeking a talented Analytical Chemist I/II to join our growing Analytical Chemistry Group. This role will support day‑to‑day laboratory testing, sample processing, and data generation that supports the diverse analytical needs for Alta. The position plays an important part in advancing Alta’s mission by providing reliable measurements that guide technical decisions across our R&D and process engineering teams. This role will be a key contributor to our innovation pipeline.

A successful candidate will bring strong foundational laboratory skills, some prior ICP experience, and a desire to learn and grow within a multidisciplinary team spanning chemistry, engineering, and operations. The role requires full‑time, on‑site presence at our Boulder lab, with occasional support outside standard hours.

Key Responsibilities Laboratory Testing & High‑Throughput Analysis
  • Perform day‑to‑day sample preparation, dilutions, and routine wet‑chemistry procedures.
  • Execute high‑throughput analytical testing to support ongoing R&D and scale‑up programs.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of samples, conditions, and results.
Instrument Operation & Data Collection
  • Operate ICP‑MS/OES and other core laboratory instruments under established methods.
  • Conduct calibrations, verification checks, and scheduled instrument tasks to maintain instrument readiness.
  • Generate and compile data for review by cross‑functional stakeholders.
Method Execution & Workflow Support
  • Follow written SOPs and analytical methods with strong attention to detail and consistency.
  • Assist in improving laboratory workflows, documentation, and sample‑handling processes.
  • Support day‑to‑day lab readiness through reagent preparation and consumables management.
Safety, Compliance & Documentation
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols for chemical handling, instrumentation, and waste management.
  • Maintain organized, complete laboratory records aligned with Alta’s quality expectations.
  • Support updates to procedures, documentation tools, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • 1‑4 years of laboratory experience in an academic, industrial, or research setting, with exposure to analytical instrumentation.
  • Foundational understanding of laboratory practices including sample preparation, dilutions, and basic wet‑chemistry techniques, with a willingness to build proficiency.
  • Experience following written methods or SOPs with attention to detail and a focus on consistent execution.
  • Basic familiarity with analytical concepts such as calibration, controls, and data quality, with a desire to further develop these skills.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Preferred, But Not Required
  • Exposure to elemental analysis techniques such as ICP‑MS, ICP‑OES, or related inorganic analytical methods.
  • Familiarity with maintaining organized laboratory workflows, including sample tracking, labeling, and general lab operations.
  • Exposure to a range of analytical instrumentation, such as LC‑based systems, mass spectrometry, particle size analysis, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to operate effectively in multidisciplinary environments with shifting priorities.
