POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
- Icy Satellite Crater Modeling
- Boulder, CO

Who We Are:

We are a team of icy satellites researchers who use numerical modeling, geologic mapping, and statistical analysis to understand the formation, evolution, and habitability of moons in the outer solar system.

Objectives of this Role:
  • Investigate elliptical crater formation by conducting simulations of impacts into icy moons in 2D and 3D (e.g., using iSALE 2D and 3D).
  • Explore the origins and dynamic habitability of icy moons by conducting disruptive impact simulations into mid-sized moons or their progenitors (e.g., using SPH).
  • Synthesize crater formation results with other data sets by collaborating with crater mapping experts, crater relaxation modelers, and other project team members.
  • Publish results in scientific journals and represent the project at conferences.
  • Archive data and results in accordance with NASA policy.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Conduct 3D simulations of impacts that produce elliptical craters on icy moons.
  • Conduct disruptive impact simulations of mid-sized icy moons or their progenitors.
  • Meet with the project team to discuss progress.
  • Compare 3D impact simulation results with 2D models, crater topography, and crater statistics.
  • Document simulations, analyses, and other work product for use in publications, annual reports, and archiving.
Requirements:
  • Requires a PhD in Planetary Science, Geoscience, Geophysics, or Astronomy.
  • 2 years:
Experience with numerical modeling of impacts into icy targets and of disruptive impacts.
Special Requirements :

Work assignment is in Boulder, Colorado. This is a 1 year limited term assignment with an option to extend.

An Equal Employment Opportunity
