Duties

As a Supervisory Research Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Direct the Stratospheric Modeling and Analysis program or an ocean-focused research division. Lead a research team in conducting stratospheric chemistry, composition, and dynamics research; OR direct research groups making long-term ocean observations, studying drivers of change in marine ecosystems, or studying environmental effects of changing ocean chemistry. Apply advanced professional knowledge of atmospheric OR oceanic science methods, models, techniques, and theory to formulate and direct research projects designed to advance knowledge of atmospheric or oceanic chemical and physical processes.
  • Provide professional hypotheses to determine the most appropriate research strategy and methodology and establish project and program objectives. Develop research plans and required investigations to implement scientific priorities that align with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) mission and goals.
  • Serve as a technical expert strengthening scientific and research collaborations across the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), academic institutions, federal and state agencies, and other stakeholders to advance the scientific mission of the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL), Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) or the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) and (NOAA). Speak for the relevant lab on national and international committees, engaging with other institutions to set research directions.
  • Supervise staff by planning and distributing work to be accomplished by subordinates. Oversee personnel processing actions, addressing performance standards and specifying training needs. Make or approve selections for subordinate nonsupervisory positions. Recommend selections for subordinate supervisory positions or project director positions responsible for coordinating the work of others, and similar positions.
