About the RoleThe Assistant Store Manager role at Goodwill of Colorado is a hands‑on leadership position that blends business savvy with genuine people leadership. We are looking for strong operators with solid customer service, financial, and team‑development skills who have led teams of 20–30 people in retail, hospitality, or production. In this high‑visibility role you’ll receive immediate training, play a key part in driving store performance, and help support our mission to provide greater independence for individuals across Colorado.
Geographically, we seek candidates in the Northern Colorado area, including Boulder, Lafayette, Broomfield, Thornton, and Arvada.
Job SummaryThe Assistant Store Manager will manage the daily operations of a retail store and act as the Retail Store Manager in the Manager’s absence.
Key responsibilities include meeting financial goals, supervising multiple departments, managing merchandising, loss prevention, point‑of‑sale systems, product quality control, and community rapport, while supporting the Retail Store Manager’s budgeting, financial reporting, and profit & loss.
Essential Functions- Work closely with the Retail Store Manager to achieve goals and increase sales and donations.
- Recommend changes to operational procedures to maximize expense‑to‑revenue ratios.
- Promote safety for all employees, ensuring adherence to OSHA and CARF standards; may serve as Safety Representative.
- Operate and train staff on equipment such as pallet jack, walkie stacker, forklift, and hand dolly.
- Monitor competition and retail trends, proposing appropriate actions.
- Maintain robust knowledge of the point‑of‑sale (POS) system.
- Lead and manage retail store staff, ensuring safety, productivity, and success.
- Oversee daily operations of all store functional areas: sales floor, storefront, donation store, production areas, and storage facilities.
- Responsible for hiring, performance management, goal setting, and termination recommendations for at least one department.
- Adhere to Goodwill policies, employee handbook, and all supplemental policies.
- Partner with the Retail Store Manager to conduct employee training sessions.
- Be on call for alarm notifications after hours.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Provides coverage for unexpected or planned absences.
- Facilitates growth and training for team members.
- Collaborates with other management personnel to enhance store performance.
- Contributes to business development initiatives.
High School diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
ExperienceAt least 2 years supervising retail operations (or similar) with accountability for business, operations, and financial results.
Other Skills and Requirements- Proficiency in office equipment, Word, Excel, web‑based applications (e.g., UKG).
- Manage corporate email and calendar (e.g., Outlook).
- Organizational skills to manage multiple projects and retail store functions.
- Ability to work within a deadline‑pressured environment.
- Understanding of marketing and retail principles.
- Knowledge of production processes, quality control, and timely staff empowerment.
- Ability to analyze financial statements and statistical information.
- Adaptability and decision‑making in changing circumstances.
- Train, develop, and recognize talent and leadership.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate upward, downward, and laterally.
- Interest in people with disabilities and disadvantages.
- Obtain walkie stacker and/or forklift certification.
- Willingness to relocate to other stores within the region.
- Availability for varied schedules: weekdays, weekends, evenings, holidays.
- Ability to drive for company business (preferred).
- Meet driver insurance criteria (age and CDL requirements).
- Undergo Motor Vehicle Record and background checks.
- Must possess a valid Colorado State driver license and vehicle insurance if using a personal vehicle for business.
