Overview

IBSS Corporation is seeking a highly motivated junior level scientist or scientific programmer analyst to contribute to our applied research and development (R&D), research to operations (R2O), and stakeholder engagement for space weather observation, modeling, and prediction capabilities.

The ideal candidate shall possess basic space weather science knowledge, nuanced scientific reasoning, and strong interest in learning and advancing operational space weather observation, modeling, forecasting, and service capabilities at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the company's Terra Precise Team in data analysis, modeling, product generation, and validation with AI-enhanced data product development in the cloud using containerized software development technology.
  • Participate in the Space Weather Testbed, hosted at the NOAA/National Weather Service (NWS) / Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, CO.
  • Interact with the space weather science, technology, and application communities to learn and evaluate emerging technology and capabilities.
  • Contribute to relevant technical areas as needed and under senior staff's direction.
Required Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a BS, MS, or PhD (Preferred) in Space Physics, Astrophysics, Plasma Physics, Physics, Atmospheric Science, Satellite Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related scientific/engineering discipline.
  • Familiarity with environmental, atmospheric, satellite, or geophysical datasets and associated data processing methodologies and techniques.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and scientific computing libraries.
  • Understanding of AI/ML techniques including data preparation, model training, validation, and predictive analytics.
  • Interest in operational forecasting systems, Earth system science, or space weather applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative research and development environment.
  • Availability to support at least 20 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in a related field.
  • Hands‑on experience with AI/ML methodologies and toolkits in data training and predictive model development;
    Experience with ML frameworks such as Tensor Flow, PyTorch, Scikit‑learn, or similar toolkits.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing, Docker/containerized workflows, or Dev Ops methodologies.
  • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining containerized applications (e.g., Docker) on AWS cloud infrastructure (e.g., EC2, S3, and Lambda).
  • Familiarity with designing, implementing, and documenting RESTful web APIs, particularly using Python-based frameworks (e.g., FastAPI, Flask, or Django).
  • Skilled with programming front‑end, web‑based, interactive geospatial visualizations of large scale scientific and non‑scientific data stored in JASON, Zarr, and Netcdf formats using Leaflet, Java script, HTML, and CSS.
  • Experience with scientific visualization and large‑scale data analysis.
  • Background knowledge in heliophysics, ionospheric science, space weather modeling/forecasting, whole atmospheric modeling.
  • Exposure to NOAA, NASA, or operational environmental data systems.
  • Residence in or near the Boulder, Colorado area is strongly preferred.
  • Strongly preferred to have residence in or near the Boulder, CO area.
