Job Description Summary

The City of Boulder is currently recruiting for a Wastewater Collections Operator, with placement opportunities available from Level I through Level IV. The successful candidate will be hired into the level that best reflects their skills, certifications, and relevant professional experience.

Under general supervision, the Wastewater Operator expedites, supports, plans, and operates and performs skilled operation, construction, maintenance, and repair of a large (CDPHE Class
4) wastewater system to include multiple types of wastewater mains, manholes, lift stations. Participates as a member of the Utilities Maintenance team and works collaboratively with other work groups and agencies to foster an efficient, proactive approach to water maintenance.

Hiring range for these positions are commensurate with experience:

  • Wastewater Collections Operation I – $23.58 – $34.19
  • Wastewater Collections Operation II – $25.93 – $37.60
  • Wastewater Collections Operation III – $28.52 – $41.36
  • Wastewater Collections Operation IV – $31.38 – $45.54
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Construct, maintain and repair wastewater systems, including performing routine maintenance on equipment as needed.

  • Assist in troubleshooting and repair processes to the collections systems according to delegated authority for a Class 4 Wastewater Collections Operator under Colorado Regulation 100 and in accordance with the Wastewater Collections Operating plan.

  • Perform utility locates and use pipe locators, leak locators, and sonde equipment. Locate underground water, sewer and storm sewer lines for the Utilities Department, private utilities, contractors, and property owners. Use equipment to locate utility lines and main breaks including metal detector, pipeline locator, pipe and cable locator, leak correlator, GPS equipment and measuring devices.

  • Interpret data trends, comprehend written technical procedures and manuals.

  • Perform after‑hour standby duty on a rotating basis and respond to Public Works emergencies as necessary including snow and ice control shifts.

  • Respond to questions from the public about stormwater system operations and maintenance activities as necessary.

  • Cross‑train in other divisions and disciplines as directed by supervisor.

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials and equipment used and enter spatial and work order data into asset management software.

  • Perform related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the city.

  • Participate in professional trainings and development.

Minimum Qualifications Wastewater Collection Operator I and II
  • Ability to clearly describe program goals and objectives and assess a situation and adjust their communication style to meet the needs of the specific situation or audience.

  • Ability to maintain a working knowledge of OSHA regulations and associated safety procedures and remain alert to conditions, hazards and events occurring at the jobsite. Always utilize the best industry safety practices.

  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records.

  • Ability to model professional maturity and tact while staying task focused.

  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment.

  • Take proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment; use all required safety equipment and follow all safety regulations, policies, and procedures. Report all accidents and damage to city property.

  • Use the following types of tools and equipment and train others in their safe and proper use: backhoe, excavator, single and tandem axle truck and snowplow, front‑end loader, hand tools, power tools, long‑handle tools, jackhammer, grinder, compressor, tamper, locating equipment.
