Engineering Equipment Operator

This position is located in Mesa Verde National Park in the Facility Management Roads&Trails Division. The role is open to current or former time‑limited (temporary or term) employees of a land‑management agency who are eligible for permanent positions under the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA).

Working conditions include shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays.

• Operate heavy gasoline or diesel‑powered engineering equipment to accomplish construction and/or excavation work on flat or rolling terrain, refuse dumps, and simple terrain construction sites.
• Operate equipment such as tractors with bulldozer, backhoe, front‑end loader, excavator, wheel loader, trench digger, skid steer, and large industrial tractors with attachments.
• Push, pull, pile, or load earth, sand, stone, snow, or refuse, and maintain ditches, road shoulders, beds, parking lots, and fire roads/lines.
• Hook up attachments, use booms, and adjust equipment settings for level, angle, or depth.
• Load, secure, and drive equipment to and from project sites.
• Perform pre‑trip safety inspections and document and report deficiencies.

The selected candidate will undergo a one‑year probationary period during which fitness and suitability for continued employment will be evaluated. Successful completion is required for appointment to continue.

• Age: 18years or older, or 16years or older with one of the following – high‑school graduate or equivalent certificate; completion of a formal vocational training program; statement from school authorities approving employment over continued education; enrollment in a secondary school and work only during school vacation or part‑time during the school year under a formal program.
• Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
• Ability to drive safely (motor vehicles).
• Ability to interpret instructions and specifications related to mobile equipment operation.
• Ability to operate safely (non‑motor vehicle).
• Reliability and dependability as an engineering equipment operator.
• Vehicle operation work practices (e.g., keeping work area neat and clean).
• Current ClassB Commercial Driver's License (CDL) – must be maintained.
