Location:
Boulder, CO Position Summary LAUKOA is seeking Stationary Engineers to operate and monitor the NIST Boulder Central Utility Plant on a 24/7/365 schedule. Stationary Engineers are responsible for safe, reliable operation of high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, air compressors, air dryers, pumps, cooling towers, water treatment systems, and the Johnson Controls Metasys building management system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Operate the Central Utility Plant to meet daily steam, chilled water, and laboratory-grade compressed air load requirements.
* Maintain required operating and standby equipment configurations and immediately report operational discrepancies.
* Remain on duty in Building 42 or the immediate vicinity of the adjacent cooling towers and generators as required.
* Monitor, review, acknowledge, and communicate Metasys alarms and coordinate with the on-duty HVAC Mechanic.
* Perform routine inspections, log readings, meter readings, adjustments, calibration checks, and condition assessments each shift.
* Conduct boiler water testing, boiler blowdowns, chemical monitoring, and related daily documentation.
* Perform minor repairs, preventive maintenance, steam trap testing and repair, cleaning, lubrication, and replacement of routine expendable parts.
* Document alarms, repairs, operating conditions, chemical results, and equipment readings in daily and monthly reports.
* Notify management and the Government promptly of outages, equipment failures, safety concerns, or conditions requiring major repair.
* Serve as shift supervisor when designated and coordinate safe shift operations.
Minimum Qualifications
* Minimum four years of verifiable stationary engineering experience.
* At least three years of experience operating high-pressure steam boilers producing more than 10 horsepower and steam pressure over 15 psi, or qualifying water-heating boilers exceeding 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
* At least one year of experience operating refrigeration equipment requiring an operator.
* Must possess or be able to obtain a valid City and County of Denver Stationary Engineer Certificate within 180 days of starting work and maintain it throughout employment.
* Experience operating direct digital controls or building management systems;
Johnson Controls Metasys experience is preferred.
* Must be able to work assigned rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, early dismissals, and site closures. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Knowledge of safe boiler, chiller, compressed air, cooling tower, pump, and water treatment operations.
* Ability to interpret gauges, meters, alarms, operating trends, job plans, and manufacturer instructions.
* Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and control system conditions and perform minor repairs without disrupting plant operations.
* Ability to accurately complete electronic logs, spreadsheets, checklists, and work records.
* Ability to communicate effectively in English and coordinate continuously with the on-duty HVAC Mechanic. Security Requirements
* Must successfully complete all required NIST badging, access, background, and security processes.
* Must maintain valid credentials and 24-hour site access.
Physical Requirements
* Ability to work an eight-hour rotating shift in a central utility plant environment.
* Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; climb stairs and ladders; bend, stoop, reach, and access confined equipment areas.
* Ability to wear required PPE and work around heat, steam, chemicals, noise, rotating equipment, and elevated surfaces.
* Ability to lift and carry tools, parts, and materials consistent with safe work practices. Wage Rate
