Director of Music Job Description

The Director of music shall be responsible for the music ministry of the church. The overall program of this ministry, as well as each part, shall be in keeping with the defined mission of The Congregational Church of Bound Brook.

The Director of Music shall work in cooperation with the Church Leadership to select appropriate music for each regularly scheduled worship service (this includes Sunday worship, Christmas Eve service, Ash Wednesday service, and Maundy Thursday service). The Director of Music shall then provide the appropriate organ/music pieces, choral pieces, and/or other instrumental pieces for each service. The purpose of the musical pieces shall be to enhance and augment the worship service and to inspire and encourage all participants in their worship experience and spiritual development.

The Director of Music shall have the responsibility of directing any and all musical groups, choirs, or soloists. Other choirs or changes to these choirs may be made by agreement with the Director of Music, the Pastor, and the Church Council.

The Director of Music shall teach and train the choir participants as necessary to increase their musical skills. The Director shall rehearse as necessary with each participant. The Director of Music shall determine the time of rehearsal(s) in cooperation with the choir members. The Pastor and church office will be advised of such times.

The Director of Music shall provide the titles of hymns, worship songs, and choir anthems to the church office in a timely fashion for inclusion in the worship bulletin for each service.

The Director of Music may purchase music for use by musicians. Such music shall become church property. Expenditures shall not exceed the amount provided in the church budget. Organ and/or piano music is to be provided by the Director of Music at his/her own expense and shall be the property of the Director of Music. The Director will collaborate with the Church Council on a music budget to be included in the annual church budget.

The Director of Music will be offered the opportunity to provide music for all weddings, funerals, memorial services, or other special services held at the church by the church. Remuneration for these is set by Church policy and will be provided by the participants and not by the church.

The Director of Music shall be responsible for determining the need of maintenance for the church organ, consistently used pianos, and other instruments owned by the church, and may recommend maintenance to be arranged by the church. The cost of such maintenance will be paid by the church.

The Director of Music shall have 2 paid vacation Sundays per year, as approved by the Church Council. Remuneration for guest musicians during the Director of Music’s vacation shall be paid by the church. Providing for the guest musicians during the vacation time shall be the responsibility of the Church Council.

The Director of Music, with the help of the Church Council if needed, may help arrange for a substitute when he/she will be absent other than scheduled vacation time.

Changes to the job description may be made by agreement of the Director of Music, the Church Council, and the Pastor.

It is expected that, in order to fulfill these responsibilities, the Director of Music shall average 10-15 hours of playing, directing, practice and/or meeting time at the church per week. Should this become unworkable, changes shall be discussed as in XI above.
