The Mental Health Insurance Biller is responsible for managing the billing cycle for behavioral health services. This role ensures accurate and timely submission of insurance claims, follows up on unpaid or denied claims, and works closely with clinicians, insurance companies, and patients to resolve billing issues. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, knowledgeable in mental health billing codes and payer requirements, and committed to maintaining compliance and confidentiality.
Hourly rate depends on experience.
- Submit and manage insurance claims for mental health services (e.g., psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluations, medication management)
- Verify insurance benefits, coverage, and authorization requirements
- Review claims for accuracy, including CPT, ICD-10, and modifier usage
- Track claim status and follow up on unpaid, underpaid, or denied claims
- Research and resolve claim denials, appeals, and payment discrepancies
- Post insurance payments and adjustments accurately in the billing system
- Communicate with insurance carriers, clinicians, and internal staff regarding billing issues
- Assist patients with billing questions, statements, and insurance explanations
- Maintain accurate billing records in compliance with HIPAA and payer guidelines
- Some credentialing as needed
- 1–3 years of medical billing experience, with mental health or behavioral health billing strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and insurance billing processes.
- Experience with Simple Practice (EHR) strongly encouraged.
- Familiarity with commercial insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare plans.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple claims simultaneously.
- Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
- Knowledge of HIPAA compliance standards.
- (Preferred) Certification in medical billing.
- Experience credentialing with insurance companies a plus.
