Job Description

Performs preliminary examinations and evaluations of patients with ocular complaints, disease or disorders by initiating and executing technical tests utilized exclusively in ophthalmology. Provides information to and consults with ophthalmologists.

40 hours per week, full‑time. Clinic hours are Monday‑Thursday 7:00am‑5:00pm and Friday (bi‑weekly) 7:00am‑12:00pm. Scheduled shifts are Monday‑Thursday 6:45am‑5:00pm and rotating Friday clinic coverage.

• Rooming patients and taking patient histories, HPI >=4 components
• Perform eye tests under Ophthalmology Quality Standards of Care including vision screenings, manual refractions, and various diagnostic tests
• Facilitate workflow of patients when assigned various clinical/technician role(s), anticipating patient traffic and helping other technicians with testing
• Facilitate prior authorizations
• Perform highly accurate manual refractions within a timely manner
• Be proficient in glaucoma testing, visual fields, fundus photos, refracting and topography
• Have experience in cataract surgery counseling for patients considering cataract surgery
• Be accurate and detail‑oriented while keeping ahead of patient flow and demonstrating flexibility and multi‑tasking
• Function as the patient advocate by teaching, directing patients, and clarifying ophthalmologist instructions per department protocol
• Have EMR experience; maintain computer literacy to ensure accuracy and timeliness with patients
• Possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
• Work well with coworkers and patients
• Practice and be aware of all safety precautions as outlined by OSHA and the CDC
• Maintain supplies and equipment for department function, including inventory control
• Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives such as CQI, TQM, Lean, and 100% participation

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers
• One year of experience as an ophthalmic technician, ophthalmic assistant or optometric technician
• Experience in cataract surgery counseling for patients considering cataract surgery
• EMR experience with a level of computer literacy that ensures accuracy and timeliness when working with patients
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
• Work well with coworkers and patients

Certification as a COA

• Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant License
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers
• Minimum one year of experience as an ophthalmic technician, ophthalmic assistant or optometric technician

$20.07 – $28.59 per hour, based on experience
