Position: Parks Superintendent at City of Bountiful, Utah

Overview

Under general guidance and direction from the Parks Director, performs administrative, supervisory, and maintenance duties in the daily operation of parks facilities.

Essential Job Functions
  • Manage the Parks division and supervise full‑time and seasonal employees.
  • Assist in hiring, training, evaluation, disciplinary actions, time‑card management and payroll preparation for Parks Department staff.
  • Promote Parks Department core values and ensure maintenance standards are met across city‑owned parks, open spaces, properties, detention basins, and public rights‑of‑way.
  • Represent the Parks Director at management meetings, City Council, budget and other public or professional gatherings.
  • Present department information to City Council and elected officials.
  • Participate in professional association conferences and training sessions.
  • Schedule, assign and monitor work for Crew Leads and seasonal personnel.
  • Develop department policies, maintenance schedules and park improvement projects.
  • Ensure daily maintenance tasks (bathroom cleaning, garbage collection, picnic table cleaning, mowing, trimming, park and playground inspections, sprinkler system maintenance) are completed.
  • Plan new and improved park facilities and manage construction projects.
  • Assist in developing the Parks Department budget, keep operations within budgetary constraints, supervise purchase orders and sign them as necessary.
  • Stay current on industry products, maintenance procedures and emerging trends.
  • Coordinate services and assist with community partner events and programs (e.g., Chalk Art Festival, Coats for Kids Car Show, Handcart Days, Summerfest, Freedom Lights Festival, Farmer’s Market, Food Truck League, Community Garden).
  • Be available for emergency callouts with a 30‑minute response time.

Additional responsibilities may be added or changed at any time under the direction of the Parks Director.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of park management and operation standards and best practices, and relevant city, state and federal regulations (ADA, EPA, OSHA).
  • Experience in developing and implementing capital improvement plans and projects.
  • Personnel management process and business management knowledge.
  • Principles of landscaping, forestry and related fields.
  • Working knowledge of sprinkler systems, tree care, pruning and arboriculture best practices.
  • Knowledge of interactive water feature equipment (chlorination systems, pumps, valves, filtration devices, gauges).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, department heads, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to direct, motivate, develop and evaluate subordinates.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make confident decisions within established city and division policies.
  • Calm, competent behavior under stressful situations.
  • Ability to work in emergency response settings and assist Police, Fire, and Emergency organizations.
  • Proficient computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, email) and familiarity with park maintenance equipment.
  • Physical capability to lift or move up to 50lbs, twist, stoop, bend and climb regularly.
  • Willingness to perform related duties as directed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in landscaping, horticulture, or a related field plus 5‑7years of parks maintenance experience, with at least 3years in a supervisory or management role (or equivalent education‑experience combination).
  • Successful completion of a background check, a driving record check and a pre‑employment drug test.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License.
  • Non‑Commercial Pesticides Applicators License with Ornamental & Turf and Vertebrate endorsement within 6months.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) license within 1year.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license within 6months.
