OverviewWorks under the close supervision of a Water System Operator IV and the general supervision of the Production or Distribution Supervisor. Performs various entry‑level duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water production and distribution system.
Essential Job FunctionsWorks as part of a crew to install, maintain, and repair new or replacement water lines, valves, fire hydrants, water meters, and other components of the City's water distribution system in streets and other assigned locations. Assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and production facilities as directed. Safely and efficiently operates equipment used in water system construction and maintenance, including utility trucks, dump trucks, compressors, jackhammers, pipe‑tapping machines, valve operators, and similar tools.
Performs routine and periodic equipment maintenance and minor repairs as assigned.
May operate a backhoe/loader in a training capacity. Performs after‑hours and overtime work, both scheduled and emergency, as required for repairs or special installations.
After six months of employment, may participate in the weeknight on‑call rotation to respond to after‑hours issues. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Basic knowledge of the care and operation of common manual and power tools.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions for trench and pipeline construction work.
- Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, and tools necessary for pipeline construction and repair activities.
- Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
- Develop skill in the use of water line installation and maintenance tools, materials, and equipment.
- Obtain a Utah Class B (CDL) driver's license within six months of hire date.
- Become a State certified level IV water distribution operator within the first year, and a State certified level IV water treatment operator within two years.
- Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Perform strenuous labor.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers and members of the public.
High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in construction or maintenance related employment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Must reside within 30 minutes of the Bountiful City Water Department.
Successfully pass a background check, a driving record check, and a pre‑employment drug test.
Required Licenses and CertificationsMust have and maintain a valid Utah Class B CDL driver's license or be able to obtain one within six months of hire date. Training is available on site for equipment operation and CDL license.
Utah Water System Operator Class IV Distribution Certification within first year and Class IV Water Treatment Certification within two years.
Working ConditionsEssential job functions require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting (up to 100 pounds). Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to performing job functions. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, thinking, and creative problem solving. Daily local travel is required in normal course of job performance.
Uncomfortable working conditions will be encountered at times due to environmental extremes. Frequent exposure to occupational and safety hazards associated with trench construction and proximity to traffic. Occasionally, will be called out after hours (nights, weekends, and holidays) to respond to emergency problems relating to public utilities.
