The Bourbonnais Public Library District is seeking a purposeful, curious, and compassionate professional to lead our Children’s Services Department. This full‑time (37.5 hours), exempt position is responsible for the supervision of Youth Services staff, programs, collections, and services for children from birth through 6th grade and their families.
Pay Range: $49,354-$74,032 Benefits Included:

Essential job duties and responsibilities include:
- Participate in the hiring and training of department staff.
- Directly supervise department staff, including planning, prioritizing, assigning, and scheduling work, coaching, and providing performance feedback.
- Ensure staff and patrons comply with library policies and procedures.
- Responsible for drafting and adhering to the department budget; approving expenses and purchases.
- Set short‑term and long‑term goals in line with the library’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Provide reference and readers’ advisory services to youth and their families.
- Provide instruction on research skills and digital literacy.
- Oversee the children’s services collection, ensuring well‑maintained and relevant materials are available. Select and order new library materials. Determine which materials should be weeded from the collection.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate library programming and literacy initiatives for birth through 6th grade that meet the diverse educational and cultural needs of the community.
- Act as a library ambassador and promote the library via marketing channels, including but not limited to social and traditional media, library displays, and community engagement.
- Develop relationships and provide outreach services as the primary liaison for schools, daycare facilities, and homeschoolers.
- Plans and maintains flexible, family‑friendly youth spaces.
- Process returns, exchange requests, and provide cataloging and location information of materials.
- Actively participate in management team meetings. Present reports on department activity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field required;
Master’s degree in Library Science/Library Information Studies strongly preferred - Minimum of three years of library experience in a children’s or youth services department
- Current knowledge of children’s literature, youth popular culture, media, and educational and technological trends
- Ability to uphold confidential information related to patron records and library matters
- Ability to lead others, exercise initiative, and make independent decisions
- Proficient in the use of standard office technology and equipment
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
Working conditions include:
- Work involves crouching, kneeling, bending, and reaching to access library materials and execute library programs. This position requires lifting up to 25 pounds and pushing book carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
- This position may require travel within the Chicagoland area for outreach services and to attend professional conferences and events.
