DescriptionThe Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing patient care activities, related non‑professional services necessary for patient care, and for maintaining the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. OR & Orthopedic experience preferred; scrub experience required.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate competency in all procedures within the scope of practice appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
- Participate in the nursing process in all aspects of patient care and complete activities according to established policy, procedure, and protocol.
- Communicate accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patients in their care.
- Record pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co‑workers.
- Utilize appropriate lines of communication.
- Use proper technique intra‑operatively by setting up needed items for patient care and demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
- Gather supplies, x‑rays, and instruments/equipment for cases.
- Handle instruments appropriately.
- Maintain strict sterile technique.
- Circulate under the direction of the Registered Nurse by appraising cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment.
- Set up needed equipment pertinent to patient care.
- Assist with anesthesia intra‑operatively.
- Carefully pre‑p surgical site.
- Assist in proper patient positioning.
- Prepare and label specimens correctly.
- Accompany patient and anesthesia staff to PACU.
- Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
- Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, organize a plan of care that incorporates physician‑prescribed treatments, nursing assessments, and diagnostic data in a manner that is prioritized, timely, and integrated with the surgical plan of care.
- Implement, document, and evaluate the plan of care in a manner that reflects management of identified problems, observations of patient response to treatment, integration of physician’s orders, appropriate prioritization, and collaboration with physicians and other team members.
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure, and protocol.
- Re‑evaluate and modify the plan of care as indicated.
- Accept responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room.
- Demonstrate appropriate judgment and decision‑making skills.
- Serve as a preceptor and orient new members of the surgical team.
- Act as the patient’s advocate in meeting physical and psychological needs.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant others, and team members.
- Create and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for surgery.
1–2 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledgeable about principles of aseptic technique.
- Ability to correlate clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care.
- Ability to set priorities.
- Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise, and promotes efficiency.
- Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co‑workers, etc.
Salary: $25–$35 per hour, depending on experience.
