SummaryThe Physician Assistant (PA) plays a vital support role in our organization, providing professional patient care and assistance to physicians and clinical staff. The PA will be primarily involved with direct patient care in outpatient clinics and hospital settings, following established protocols and the Physician Assistant Practice Act of Illinois.
We are seeking a motivated PA to support our orthopedic surgeon focused on adult reconstruction for hip and knee arthritis.
Travel between our locations in Bourbonnais, Tinley, and Frankfort is required.
Responsibilities- Assist the surgeon by rounding on patients in the hospital and performing consults.
- Assist in major and minor surgical procedures in the operating room, including patient preparation, wound closure, dressing, and post‑operative wound care.
- Perform minor surgical procedures within scope of licensure.
- Coordinate patient care between the office and hospital, writing orders, and reporting patient status.
- Coordinate patient discharge, including prescriptions, instructions, and summary.
- Dictate surgical reports within 48 hours post‑procedure.
- Participate in on‑call activities as assigned.
- See patients independently and under supervision; dictate clinic progress notes.
- Order appropriate tests and develop treatment plans with physician approval.
- Dictate H&P, consultations and discharge summaries.
- Perform joint aspirations/injections and interpret imaging.
- Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, staples, sutures, and drains.
- Assist with triage of physician calls and review lab/radiology results.
- Administer therapeutic injections and perform minor procedures.
- Explain surgical processes to pre‑operative patients and provide post‑operative care.
- Prescribe medications in accordance with protocols.
- Follow ICD‑10 and billing guidelines.
- Return patient phone messages and document actions.
- Perform initial and ongoing clinical assessment, obtain history, and perform physical examination.
- Develop treatment plans and perform basic care services such as wound assessment, dressing changes, and suture removal.
- Perform minor and additional procedures including cast application, fracture reduction, deep suturing, joint injection, placement of traction pins, and reduction of dislocated prostheses.
- Obtain preoperative history and physical exam.
- Act as primary or secondary assistant in approved operating room procedures.
- Provide pre‑operative and post‑operative education to patients and families.
- Write orders for treatment and diagnostics, including controlled substances.
- Dictate reports such as History and Physical, Operative Notes, and Discharge Summary.
- Requires full range of motion, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Normal visual acuity and hearing; work under stressful and irregular hours.
- Exposure to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, blood‑borne pathogens, toxic substances, and radiation.
- Travel to associated hospitals and facilities.
- Graduate of an accredited PA program with completed residency.
- Maintain active Illinois PA licensure.
- Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.
- Active certification from NCCPA.
- Active Illinois licensure; ACLS desirable, CPR required.
- At least two years of experience in physician office or hospital (preferred).
- Independent decision‑making in patient care.
- Strong professional judgment and integrity.
- Experience assisting in surgery and diagnosing patients.
- Managed care and Medicare population experience.
- Practice management and EHR software knowledge.
- Physical ability to lift patients and assist.
- Self‑starter with organization and time‑management skills.
