About the RoleThe Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to serve as a member of the Sheriff’s Executive Team.
The CFO serves as the agency’s principal financial advisor, providing executive leadership for financial operations, strategic planning, budgeting, accounting, forecasting, audits, procurement, payroll, and long-term fiscal management.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring sound financial stewardship while supporting the Sheriff’s mission through transparent, efficient, and accountable financial practices.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe Chief Financial Officer will:
- Lead development and administration of the agency’s annual operating budget
- Advise executive leadership on financial strategy and resource allocation
- Direct accounting, payroll, procurement, and contract administration
- Oversee financial reporting, audits, and compliance with GAAP
- Develop long-range financial forecasts and capital planning initiatives
- Maintain strong internal controls and risk management practices
- Provide financial analysis for labor negotiations and workforce planning
- Manage agency cash flow and banking relationships
- Oversee fixed asset accounting and grant compliance
- Support continuous improvement of financial systems and reporting processes
- Supervise professional accounting and finance staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Extensive knowledge of governmental accounting and budgeting
- Strong understanding of public-sector financial regulations and auditing standards
- Ability to analyze complex financial data and provide executive recommendations
- Strategic financial planning and organizational leadership skills
- Strong supervisory and team management experience
- Advanced reporting, spreadsheet, and financial modeling abilities
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Option 1
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or related field)
- 10 years of governmental accounting experience
- Minimum 4 years in a supervisory role
Option 2
- Master’s degree in Accounting (or related field)
- 7 years of governmental accounting experience
- Minimum 4 years in a supervisory role
- CPA, CIA, CGFO, CGFM, or related certification
- Experience with MOSAIC and HR CMS
- Payroll, procurement, contract management, and budget administration experience
- Experience serving on an administrative team within a municipality or state agency
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
