Job Overview
Registered Nurse for evening shift (2pm-10pm) at Barnstable County Correctional Facility. Work 24 hours per week with an every‑other weekend schedule and holiday rotation. Responsible for nursing care, oversight of individual plans of care, and health assessments for inmates and detainees.
Responsibilities- Perform initial and ongoing nursing assessments and provide treatment, education, and referrals in accordance with facility protocols and medical orders.
- Document assessments, interventions, and care plans in compliance with provider orders and nursing standards.
- Coordinate sick‑call triage, collaborating with medical providers and nursing staff to address medical and mental‑health needs.
- Educate inmates on their medical conditions, management strategies, and wellness practices, both individually and in group settings.
- Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of all inmate medical records.
- Assist with ordering, receiving, returning, and accounting for medications, and distribute medications per provider orders and nursing standards.
- Supervise care provided by Licensed Practical Nurses, EMTs, and Medical Assistants, ensuring adherence to individual plans of care.
- Coordinate special dietary and medical requirements with health‑care providers and food service staff.
- Review external health‑related documentation and collaborate with the medical provider regarding recommendations for changes in care.
- Communicate inmate health issues to health‑care providers, mental‑health clinicians, nursing staff, administrative personnel, and security staff as needed.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and modify nursing care plans for all inmates.
- Provide emergency medical care and triage in collaboration with HCPs when available.
- Assist in ensuring medical conditions are treated under facility processes and in communication with the Director of Health Services and shift supervisors.
- Associate’s degree in nursing or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Science.
- Current licensure by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Nursing.
- CPR certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience.
- Preferred:
Minimum of 1 year working in a correctional facility and/or substance‑abuse or detoxification nursing. - Demonstrated ability to work a weekend and holiday rotation.
- Must maintain all certifications and attend required trainings.
This position requires intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, lifting, and supporting inmates. Work is required within the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and with individuals currently incarcerated there.
