Job Description
LPN – Evening (24 Hours per week). 2:00 pm‑10:00 pm. Every other weekend required. Holiday rotation required.
Position SummaryThe Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care and preliminary health assessments for inmates and detainees within the Barnstable County Correctional Facility following established standards and practices, and in accordance with security procedures of the facility. The LPN also functions as an information resource to staff on health issues.
Supervision ReceivedReceives direct supervision from the Sheriff, Special Sheriff, Superintendent, Director of Health Services, supervising Psychiatrist and Registered Nurse overseeing plans of care.
Duties and Responsibilities- Distribute medications in accordance with medical providers’ orders and nursing standards.
- Provide nursing treatments in accordance with medical providers’ orders and nursing standards.
- Complete nursing documentation as required by facility and nursing standards.
- Routinely perform nursing sick call – triage inmate requests for medical attention.
- Perform nursing assessments and provide treatment and/or referrals to medical providers in accordance with facility‑established and MD approved nursing protocols.
- Assist and collaborate with the medical provider regarding sick call and all aspects of patient care.
- Communicate with the Director of Health Services and Shift Commanders to ensure medical conditions are treated and considered in facility processes.
- Coordinate inmate appointments with medical assistant and consulting medical providers.
- Provide emergency medical care within the scope of nursing practice to inmates and staff when needed.
- Maintain the confidentiality and accuracy of all inmate residents’ medical records, including daily sick call, refusal of treatment, medication dispensed, and physical examination.
- Assist in ordering and receiving medications from the pharmacy and communicate the need for stock items to the Director of Health Services.
- Coordinate all special medical diets with the medical provider and the food service staff.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and modify plans of nursing care for all inmates under the supervision of the Registered Nurse overseeing the inmate’s plan of care.
- Deliver instruction on general health and wellness topics to inmates in individual and/or group settings.

General knowledge of medical records best practices.

Ability to maintain good attendance.

Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement and to handle confidential information.
Ability to maintain all certifications as necessary.
Ability to attend necessary trainings as required.
Qualifications- Licensure by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Nursing.
- CPR certification.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience as an LPN.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a correctional facility and/or substance abuse or detox nursing (preferred but not required).
- Ability to work a weekend and holiday rotation.
This position requires intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, lifting, and supporting inmates. Ability to lift and carry medical equipment.
This position requires working within the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and with individuals currently incarcerated there.
