Position: LPN - Day (32 Hours per week)

Licensed Practical Nurse – Day Shift (32 Hours per week)

We are hiring LPNs for the Day Shift (6:00am-2:00pm). 32 hours per week. Every other weekend and holiday rotation required.

Position Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides professional nursing care and preliminary health assessments for inmates and detainees at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility. The LPN serves as an information resource to staff on health issues and works within established standards, nursing practices, and security procedures.

Supervision

Receives direct supervision from the Sheriff, Special Sheriff, Superintendent, Director of Health Services, supervising psychiatrist, and a registered nurse overseeing plans of care.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Distributes medications according to medical provider orders and nursing standards.
• Provides nursing treatments in line with medical provider orders and nursing standards.
• Completes nursing documentation as required by facility and nursing standards.
• Conducts routine Nursing Sick Call—triaging inmate requests for medical attention.
• Performs nursing assessments and provides treatment or referrals to medical providers per facility‑approved nursing protocols.
• Assists and collaborates with medical providers regarding sick call and all aspects of patient care.
• Communicates with the Director of Health Services and shift commanders to ensure medical conditions are treated and considered in facility processes.
• Coordinates inmate appointments with medical assistants and consulting medical providers.
• Provides emergency medical care within the scope of nursing practice to inmates and staff when needed.
• Maintains confidentiality and accuracy of all inmate residents’ medical records, including daily sick call, refusal of treatment, medication dispensed, and physical examinations.
• Assists in ordering and receiving medications from the pharmacy and in communicating the need for stock items to the Director of Health Services.
• Coordinates special medical diets with the medical provider and food service staff.
• Develops, implements, evaluates, and modifies plans of nursing care for all inmates under the oversight of the supervising RN.
• Delivers instruction on general health and wellness topics to inmates in individual and/or group settings.
