About the Role

TFAS is searching for a self-starting, innovative and creative thinker to join its Administration & Finance team as a Staff Accountant.

The Staff Accountant will work with the Senior Accountant and CFO in managing all accounting cycle activities, including monthly closing of general ledger and accounts payable, bank account reconciliations, cash receipts and disbursements, investments, fixed assets, and general journal entries.

The position will also assist with budget preparation, financial reporting, government filings, and annual financial audits.

The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills, very high attention to detail, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and an eagerness to learn about the financial aspects of the organization.

This Staff Accountant will report to the Senior Accountant. This is an in-person position based at TFAS's Washington, D.C., office.

Core Duties + Responsibilities
  • Record Weekly Cash Receipts: download activities from bank accounts and prepare cash receipts journal entries including all backup documents to support them. Some receipts are tracked through various systems such as Stripe, Paypal, Freshbooks, and Sales Force. Coordinates with the Development Operations Team to receive any backup documentation needed and with the Admin & Finance Team for any remote bank deposits.

    The Staff Accountant serves as backup to the team member who makes remote bank deposits
  • Record General Ledger Journal Entries: Draft and enter general journal entries for cash receipts, investments, fixed assets, accounts payable, and other various balance sheet and income accounts as needed in the Sage Intacct General Ledger System. The Staff Accountant serves as backup to the team member who manages Accounts Payable bill entry ()
  • Bank Account Reconciliations: Reconcile company’s bank accounts on a monthly basis using online automated bank rec module.
  • General Ledger Account Reconciliations: Reconcile select Balance Sheet and Income Statement Accounts as needed on a monthly basis, including investments and fixed assets.
  • Government Reporting/Regulation: Manage filings with state government agencies to comply with fundraising activities
  • Budget Preparation Assistance: Assist Senior Accountant and CFO in preparing the annual operating budget by assisting with analyzing general ledger accounts and preparing budget to actual reports for managers.
  • Financial Audit Assistance: Assist Senior Accountant and CFO with preparations for the annual financial audit, including preparing audit work papers.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business preferred
  • 1–2 years of accounting experience, preferably in non-profit accounting including college internships
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams. CRM experience (especially Sage Intacct) is a plus
