This position may be filled as either a Librarian or Public Services Specialist, depending on the candidate’s education and experience.

Position Summary

Leads teen focused services, programs, and outreach; participates in daily branch operations; supervises and supports staff; and helps create a welcoming, safe, and engaging environment for teens and the broader community.

Essential Duties
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate approximately three staff members; support staff development and performance.
  • Plan, facilitate, and evaluate programs and services for teens, including workshops, life skills, career readiness, wellness, and systemwide initiatives.
  • Build relationships with teens and young adults and use their interests and needs to help shape programs, services, and resources.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with schools, colleges, community organizations, and government and social service agencies to support teen outreach and engagement.
  • Promote the Teen Zone, a makerspace, its services, and programs within the library and throughout the community; represent the library at community events.
  • Stay informed about trends and issues affecting teens and young adults and apply current practices to library services and programming.
  • Provide reference, reader’s advisory, technology assistance, and instruction on library resources, including the catalog and online databases.
  • Assist customers at information and circulation service points as needed.
  • Serve as Person-in-Charge as assigned and help maintain a safe and welcoming environment by addressing customer concerns, behavior, and conflicts.
  • Assist with grants, collection development and maintenance, and other activities supporting teen services and branch operations.
  • Use and support makerspace and technology resources, including equipment such as 3D printers, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, and recording studio equipment.
  • Participate in branch operations and represent and advocate for library services.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience
  • Librarian:
    Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program, Maryland Professional Public Librarian certificate, and two years of progressively responsible professional library experience; or
  • Public Services Specialist (PSS):
    Bachelor’s degree, Maryland State Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) certificate, and theeyears of professional library experience.
  • At least two years of experience working with teens and young adults to understand their needs and help develop relevant materials, services, or programs.
  • Two years of supervisory experience, including experience providing direction, support, and performance feedback to staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of teen development, group dynamics, behavior management, and teen services preferably in a public library setting.
  • Experience with makerspace equipment, such as 3D printers, recording studios, and vinyl cutters.
  • Strong communication, customer service, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with teens, young adults, coworkers, and community partners.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy public service environment.
