Nature of WorkThis position is in the Office of Materials Technology’s Asphalt Technology Division and serves as a Quality Assurance (QA) Inspector for the Asphalt Quality Assurance (QA) Program. It is essential to OMT operations and to the Maryland State Highway Administration as a whole, acting as the on‑site OMT representative for all asphalt plant and project acceptance operations. The Senior Field Technician audits, evaluates, and enforces the proper manufacture, shipment, and placement of asphalt mixes statewide.
The role ensures that the asphalt mix accepted for payment in SHA projects complies with complex quality level standards and specifications. The Senior Field Technician has the authority to make independent, on‑the‑spot decisions regarding material acceptance or rejection, or to mandate corrective action to assure quality of materials.
The Senior Field Technician audits, evaluates, and enforces the proper manufacture, shipment, and placement of asphalt mixes statewide. They supervise complex sampling, testing, and inspection activities performed by the contractor’s Quality Control (QC) Certified Technicians at the manufacturing and placement sites, and they are responsible for authorizing acceptance or rejection of materials.
Minimum QualificationsEducation: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Eight (8) years of technical engineering related work in design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Qualification:
Three (3) years of experience in engineering applications of asphalt mixtures, binders, or emulsions.

- Knowledge of construction and material specifications
- Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
- Applicants who possess an associate degree in engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college, or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.
Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland.
Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Level I and Hot Mix Asphalt Field Certifications must be received within one (1) year of assuming the position.
Special Requirements- Employees in this role are on-call and must be reachable by phone.
- Employees will be required to work various shifts, and on weekends depending on assignments.
- Employees will be required to travel long distances in Maryland and neighboring states.
